What is the entry age of 5th-grade students in Vietnam?

Under the provisions of Article 33 of the Charter promulgated together with Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT as follows:

Age of primary school students
1. The age of students entering the first grade is 06 years old and is calculated in years. Children with physical or intellectual disadvantages, children in areas with exceptional socio-economic difficulties, children belonging to ethnic minorities, orphan children, children returning from overseas, and children of foreigners studying and working in Vietnam can enter the first grade at an older age but not exceeding 03 years old. the head of the Education and Training Department shall decide on cases in which children enter the first grade exceeding 03 years old compared to the regulations.
2. Primary school students who are students repeating classes, students living in areas with exceptional socio-economic difficulties, students belonging to ethnic minorities, disabled and handicapped students, students with physical or intellectual disadvantages, orphan students, students returning from overseas, and other cases as prescribed by law may commence schooling at an older age.

At the same time, based on the provisions of Clause 1, Article 28 of the 2019 Education Law as follows:

Educational levels and entry ages
1. Educational levels and age groups of general education are regulated as follows:
a) Primary education lasts for 05 school years, from the first to the fifth grade. The entry age for the first grade is 06;
b) Lower secondary education lasts for 04 school years, from the sixth to the ninth grade. Students must complete the primary educational programme before entering the sixth grade. The entry age for the sixth grade is 11;
c) Upper secondary education lasts for 03 school years, from the tenth to the twelfth grade. Students must complete the lower secondary educational programme before entering the tenth grade. The entry age for the tenth grade is 15;

Thus, in normal cases, the entry age of first-grade students is 06 and is calculated in years. Therefore, the entry age of 5th-grade students is 10 under normal conditions.

What is the roadmap for assessment of primary school students in Vietnam under Circular 27?

According to Article 2 of Circular 27/2020/TT-BGDDT on the assessment of primary school students issued by the Minister of Education and Training, the regulations on assessment of primary school students shall be implemented complying with the following roadmap:

- From 2020-2021 school year for first grade.

- From 2021-2022 school year for second grade.

- From 2022-2023 school year for third grade.

- From 2023-2024 school year for fourth grade.

- From 2024-2025 school year for fifth grade.

What are the contents of assessment of primary school students in Vietnam?

According to Clause 1, Article 5, Regulations on assessment of primary school students issued together with Circular 27/2020/TT-BGDDT, the contents of assessment of primary school students in Vietnam are specified as follows:

- Assess learning process, progression and academic results of students satisfying requirements and specific display of capacities of each subject and academic activities according to formal primary education programs.

- Assess formation and development of traits and capacities of students via following primary traits and capacities:

+ Primary traits: patriotism, humane, diligence, honesty, and sense of responsibility.

+ Primary capacities:

++ General capacities: self-control, self-studying, communication, cooperation, problem resolution and creativity;

++ Specific capacities: language, calculation, science, technology, computer, aesthetic, and physical attributes.

What are the methods for assessing primary school students in Vietnam?

According to Clause 2, Article 5, Regulations on assessment of primary school students issued together with Circular 27/2020/TT-BGDDT, commonly used assessment methods for assessing students are:

- Assessment by observation: Teachers monitor and listen to students when teaching in classes, employ observation cards, examination boards and records of student's behaviors as proof for assessment of studying and training processes of students.

- Assessment by academic records, products and activities of students: Teachers provide feedback and assessment regarding products and activity results of students thereby assessing students based on relevant assessment criteria.

- Assessment by communication: Teachers discuss with students in form of questions and answers to collect information and promptly provide comment, remedial measures.

- Assessment by writing: Teachers employ tests consisting of questions and exercises designed according to levels and requirements to be achieved of the program in form of multiple-choice questions and writing tests to assess level of completion for academic assessment criteria.
