What date is Easter Day 2024 in Vietnam?
In English, “lễ phục sinh” is Easter Day. It is considered an important holiday for Christians.
The Easter Day marks Jesus' execution and resurrection of all Christians.
According to the Catholic liturgical calendar, Easter Day fall on at a Sunday between March 21 and April 25. Easter Day 2024 falls on Sunday, March 31, 2024.
The 2024 Easter season begins with the Vigil on Holy Saturday (March 30, 2024), the night just before Easter Day (Sunday, March 31, 2024). This season lasts 50 days (i.e. 7 weeks) until the end of the feast of the Holy Spirit (May 19, 2024).employees in Vietnam
Are employees in Vietnam entitled to take a day off on Easter Day?
Under the provisions of Article 112 of the 2019 Labor Code as follows:
Public holidays
1. Employees shall be entitled to fully paid days off on the following public holidays:
a) Gregorian Calendar New Year Holiday: 01 day (the 1st of January of the Gregorian calendar);
b) Lunar New Year Holidays: 05 days;
c) Victory Day: 01 day (the 30th of April of the Gregorian calendar);
d) International Labor Day: 01 day (the 1st of May of the Gregorian calendar);
dd) National Day: 02 days (the 2nd of September of the Gregorian calendar and the previous or next day);
e) Hung Kings Commemoration Day: 01 day (the 10th of the third month of the Lunar calendar).
2. Foreign employees in Vietnam are entitled to 01 traditional public holiday and 01 National Day of their country, in addition to the public holidays stipulated in Clause 1 of this Article.
3. The Prime Minister shall decide the specific public holidays mentioned in Point b and Point dd Clause 1 of this Article on an annual basis.
In addition, Article 111 of the 2019 Labor Code stipulates as follows:
Weekly breaks
1. Each week an employee is entitled to a break of at least 24 consecutive hours. Where it is impossible for the employee to have a weekly day off due to the work cycle, the employer has the responsibility to ensure that on average the employee has at least 04 days off per month.
2. The employer has the right to determine and schedule the weekly breaks either on Sunday or for another fixed day in a week, which must be recorded in the internal labor regulations.
3. In case a public holiday falls on an employee’s weekly break coincide with a public holiday as prescribed in Clause 1 Article 112 of this Labor Code, he/she will have compensatory time-off on the next working days.
According to the above regulations, Easter Day 2024 is not included in the prescribed public holidays.
Therefore, employees in Vietnam are not entitled to take a day off on this day. However, if Easter Day coincides with a weekly break, employees in Vietnam will be entitled to a weekly break.
What are the regulations on the right to freedom of religion and folk belief for every person in Vietnam?
Under the provisions of Article 6 of the Law on Folk Belief and Religion 2016, the right to freedom of religion and folk belief for every person is specified as follows:
- Every person has the right to freedom of religion and folk belief and the right to follow or not to follow a religion.
- Every person has the right to manifest the faith of religion or folk belief and to perform religious and folk religious rites; participate in festivals; learn and exercise religious law and tenets.
- Every person has the right to pursue a monastic life in religious establishments and pursue education in religious educational institutions and religious organizations’ supplementary courses. Adolescents require the permission of their parents or guardians for pursuing a monastic life in a religious establishment or pursuing education in a religious educational institution.
- Dignitaries, sub-dignitaries and monastics have the right to perform religious rites, to preach and to do missionary work in religious establishments or at legitimate locations.
- People held in detention under the legislation on temporary detention, people serving time in prison, people sent to a reformatory, compulsory education institution or compulsory rehabilitation center have the right to read scriptures and manifest their faith of religion or folk belief.
- The government shall stipulate detail on the maintenance of the rights defined in Section 5 of this Article.
At the same time, in Article 8 of the Law on Folk Belief and Religion 2016, the right to freedom of religion and folk belief for foreigners residing lawfully in Vietnam is specified as follows:
- Right to freedom of religion and folk belief for foreigners residing lawfully in Vietnam
- The government of Vietnam respects and protects the right to freedom of religion and folk belief of the foreigners who reside lawfully in Vietnam.
- Foreigners residing lawfully in Vietnam have the right to:
+ Practice religion, practice folk beliefs and participate in religious activities;
+ Practice religion en masse at legitimate locations;
+ Invite Vietnamese dignitaries, sub-dignitaries and monastics to perform religious rites and preach; invite foreign dignitaries and monastics to deliver sermon;
+ Pursue a monastic life in religious establishments, pursue education in religious educational institutions and attend supplementary courses in religious establishments in Vietnam;
+ Carry religious publications and articles to practice religion under the laws of Vietnam.
- Foreign dignitaries and monastics who reside lawfully in Vietnam are permitted to give sermon in religious establishments or at legitimate locations in Vietnam.
