What are the instructions for grading the academic results of primary school students in the 2023-2024 school year in Vietnam?

For 1,2,3, and 4 graders:

Under the provisions in Clause 2, Article 9 of the Regulations issued together with Circular 27/2020/TT-BGDDT, at the end of a school year, based on consolidated assessment results of each subject, academic activities and primary traits, capacities, class mentors shall:

Assess the academic results of students by 4 levels:

Grading of academic results

Criteria

Excellent completion

Students who achieve excellent scores in assessment results of subjects, academic activities; good in traits and capacities; at least 9 score in periodic final exams of subjects

Good completion

Students who fail to achieve excellent completion but achieve good scores in assessment results of subjects, academic activities; good in traits and capacities; at least 7 score in periodic final exams of subjects;



Completion

Students who fail to achieve excellent and good completion but achieve good or completion scores in assessment results of subjects, academic activities; good or satisfied in traits and capacities; at least 5 score in periodic final exams of subjects;


No completion

Other students.

For 5 graders:

According to the provisions of Article 10 of Circular 30/2014/TT-BGDDT amended by Clause 4, Article 1 of Circular 22/2016/TT-BGDDT:

At the end of the school year, teachers, based on the regular assessment results and standards of knowledge and skills, assess students for each subject and academic activities by the following levels:

- Good completion: good performance of the academic requirements of the subject or academic activity;

- Completion: performance of the academic requirements of the subject or academic activity;

- No completion: failure to fully perform the academic requirements of the subject or academic activity.

What are the instructions for grading the academic results of lower and upper secondary school students in the 2023-2024 school year in Vietnam?

(1) For 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11 graders:

The grading of the academic results of 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11 graders in the first semester of the 2023-2024 school year will follow Clause 2, Article 9 of the Regulations issued with Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT.

For subjects assessed via both feedback and scores, DTBmhk is used to assess the academic results of a student in each semester while DTBmcn is used to assess the academic results of a student in the entire school year. Academic results of a student in each semester and in the entire school year shall be assessed by one of 4 categories: Excellent, Good, Qualified, Unqualified.

- Excellent:

+ All subjects assessed with feedback are placed in the Qualified category.

+ All subjects assessed by both feedback and scores have minimum scores of 6.5 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn with 6 subjects among which have minimum scores of 8.0 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn.

- Good:

+ All subjects assessed with feedback are placed in the Qualified category.

+ All subjects assessed by both feedback and scores have minimum scores of 5.0 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn with 6 subjects among which have minimum scores of 6.5 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn.

- Qualified:

+ Have no more than 1 subject assessed via feedback placed in the Unqualified category.

+ At least 6 subjects assessed by both feedback and scores have minimum scores of 5.0 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn with 0 subjects having scores lower than 3.4 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn.

- Unqualified: Remaining cases

*Note: If the assessment results of a semester and/or a school year is lowered by at least 2 categories from categories “Excellent” and “Good” due to assessment results of a single subject, the learning assessment results of the semester and/or school year shall be raised to the adjacent category.

(2) For 9 and 12 graders:

The grading of the academic results of 9 and 12 graders in the first semester of the 2023-2024 school year will follow Article 13 of the Regulation on assessment and grading of lower and upper secondary school students issued together with Circular 58/2011/TT-BGDDT is amended by Clause 6, Clause 7, Article 2 of Circular 26/2020/TT-BGDDT.

The grading of the academic results of 9 and 12 graders is specified as follows:

- Good grade:

+ Grade point average of the subjects from 8.0 points or more in which average point of one of 3 subjects: Mathematics, Literature, Foreign Language shall be from 8.0 or more; separately for students of specialized classes of specialized high schools, it is required to add condition of average point of the specialized subject from 8.0 or more;

+ There are no subjects that grade point average is below 6.5;

+ The subjects evaluated by comments reached S.

- Rather good grade:

+ Grade point average of the subjects from 6.5 points or more in which average point of one of 3 subjects: Mathematics, Literature, Foreign Language shall be from 6.5 or more; separately for students of specialized classes of specialized high schools, it is required to add condition of average point of the specialized subject from 6.5 or more;

+ There are no subjects that grade point average is below 5.0;

+ The subjects evaluated by comments reached S.

- Medium grade:

+ Grade point average of the subjects from 5.0 points or more in which average point of one of 3 subjects: Mathematics, Literature, Foreign Language shall be from 5.0 or more; separately for students of specialized classes of specialized high schools, it is required to add condition of average point of the specialized subject from 5.0 or more;

+ There are no subjects that grade point average is below 3.5;

+ The subjects evaluated by comments reached S.

- Weak grade:

Grade point average of the subjects from 3.5 points or more, there are no subjects that grade point average is below 2.0.

- Poor grade: The remaining cases.

However, if DTBhk or DTBcn reaches the level of the good grade and the rather good grade but as a result of only one subject that is lower than the level prescribed for that type, so academic results should be ranked lower shall be adjusted as follows:

+ If DTBhk or DTBcn reaches G but as a result of a certain subject that must be down Medium grade, it shall be adjusted into R.

+ If DTBhk or DTBcn reaches G but as a result of a certain subject that must be down Weak grade, it shall be adjusted into Medium grade.

+ If DTBhk or DTBcn reaches R but as a result of a certain subject that must be down W, it shall be adjusted into M.

+ If DTBhk or DTBcn reaches R but as a result of a certain subject that must be down P, it shall be adjusted into W.

What are the applicable legislative documents specifying the assessment and grading of students in Vietnam during the 2023-2024 school year?

For primary school students

Under the provisions of Article 2, Circular 27/2020/TT-BGDDT on the roadmap for the assessment and grading of students:

Regulations on assessment of primary school students shall be implemented complying with the following roadmap:
1. From 2020-2021 school year for first grade.
2. From 2021-2022 school year for second grade.
3. From 2022-2023 school year for third grade.
4. From 2023-2024 school year for fourth grade.
5. From 2024-2025 school year for fifth grade.

Thus, in the 2023-2024 school year, Circular 27/2020/TT-BGDDT shall be applied to 1,2,3, and 4 graders.

And Circular 30/2014/TT-BGDDT shall be applied to 5 graders.

For secondary school students

Under Clause 1, Article 21 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT on the assessment and grading of students:

Entry into force
1. This Circular comes into force from September 5, 2021 according to following roadmap:
- From school year of 2021-2022 for the 6th grade.
- From school year of 2022-2023 for the 7th and 10th grade.
- From school year of 2023-2024 for the 8th and 11th grade.
- From school year of 2024-2025 for the 9th and 12th grade.

Thus, in the 2023 - 2024 school year, Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT will be applied for 6,7,8,10, and 11 graders.

And Circular 58/2011/TT-BGDDT amended and supplemented by Circular 26/2020/TT-BGDDT shall be applied to 9 and 12 graders.
