What is the scope of application of National Standard TCVN 5574: 2018 on the design of concrete and reinforced concrete structures in Vietnam?

Pursuant to the provisions of National Standard TCVN 5574: 2018 on the design of concrete and reinforced concrete structures in Vietnam, the scope of application is specified as follows:

This National Standard specifies the requirements for the design of concrete and reinforced concrete structures of dwellings and buildings with different functions, subject to the systematic impact of temperatures not higher than positive 50 °C and not lower than minus 70 °C, working in a non-abrasive medium.

This National Standard specifies requirements for the design of concrete and reinforced concrete structures constructed from heavy concrete, small grain concrete, lightweight concrete, honeycomb concrete and self-stressed concrete.

This National Standard does not prescribe requirements for the design of steel-concrete composite structures, reinforced concrete structures, semi-assembled structures, concrete and reinforced concrete structures of hydro works, bridges, coatings of automobile pavements and airport runways and of other special works, as well as not prescribing requirements for designing structures made from concrete with an average volume of less than 500 kg/m3 and greater than 2500 kg/m3, concrete polymer and polymer concrete, concrete on a substrate of adhesives of lime, slag and mixed binders (unless using them in honeycomb concrete), on plaster and special adhesives, concrete using special aggregates and organic aggregates, concrete with a large hollow structure. The design of the above-mentioned structures should be carried out in accordance with the relevant standards.

What are the general requirements for concrete and reinforced concrete structures in Vietnam?

Pursuant to Section 4 National Standard TCVN 5574: 2018 on the design of concrete and reinforced concrete structures in Vietnam, the general requirements for concrete and reinforced concrete structures are clearly stated as follows:

(1) All kinds of concrete and reinforced concrete structures must satisfy:

- Safety requirements;

- Requirements for normal conditions of use;

- Long-term durability requirements;

- Additional requirements outlined in the design task.

(2) In order to fulfill safety requirements, the structure shall have original features such that, under various calculated effects during the construction and use of dwellings and buildings, damage to any features or violation of normal conditions of use harmful to the life or health of persons is excluded, property, surroundings, life, and health of animals and plants.

(3) In order to fulfill the requirements of normal conditions of use, the structure should have initial characteristics so that under various calculated effects no excessive crack formation or expansion occurs, nor excessive displacement, oscillations, and other damages that make it difficult to use normally (violation of the requirements for the external shape of the structure, technological requirements for the normal working of equipment, structures, structural requirements for the simultaneous working of components and other requirements imposed when designing).

In necessary cases, the structure should have characteristics that meet the requirements of heat insulation, sound insulation, biological protection and other requirements.

Crack-free requirements are set for:

- Reinforced concrete structures, in which when their entire cross section is tensile, impermeability should still be ensured (structures subjected to liquid or gas pressure, structures subject to radioactive effects and similar structures);

- Specific structures that have enhanced requirements for long-term durability;

- Structures working in aggressive environments according to TCVN 12251: 2018.

In the remaining concrete structures, cracks are allowed to form and for them, there must be requirements to limit the crack width.

(4) In order to fulfill the long-term durability requirements, the structure should have initial characteristics such that throughout the established long period of time, it will still satisfy the requirements of safety and conditions of use taking into account the effects of various calculated effects (long-term effects of loads, adverse effects of climate, technology, temperature and humidity, aggressive effects, etc.) to the geometric features of the structure and the mechanical features of the material.

(5) The safety, conditions of use, long-term durability of concrete and reinforced concrete structures and other requirements set forth in the design task should be ensured by the implementation:

- The requirements for concrete and its components;

- Requirements for reinforcement;

- Requirements for structural calculations;

- Structural requirements;

- Technology requirements;

- Usage requirements.

Requirements for loads and impacts, fire resistance limits, water impermeability, limiting values of deformation (deflection, displacement, amplitude of oscillations), the calculated values of the outside air temperature and relative humidity of the surrounding environment, on protection of structures affected by aggressive environments and other requirements specified in corresponding standards (TCVN 2737: 1995, Annex M of this TCVN 5574: 2018, TCVN 9386: 2012, TCVN 12251: 2018, TCVN 9362: 2012 and other related standards).

(6) When designing concrete and reinforced concrete structures, the reliability of the structures is specified in TCVN 9379: 2012 according to the semi-probability calculation method using the calculated values of load and impact, the calculated characteristics of concrete and reinforcement (or structural steel), determined with the corresponding individual reliability coefficients of the standard values of these characteristics, taking into account the degree of importance of dwellings and buildings.

Standard values of loads and impacts, values of load reliability coefficients, performance reliability coefficients of structures, as well as the classification of loads into regular and temporary (long-term and short-term) are specified in the corresponding standards for construction structures (TCVN 2737:1995 and others).

The calculated value of the load and the impact taken depends on the calculated limit state and the calculation case.

The degree of reliability of the calculated values of the specified material characteristics depends on the case of the calculation and on the risk of reaching the corresponding limit state and is adjusted by the value of the reliability coefficient on concrete and reinforcement (or structural steel).

Calculation of concrete and reinforced concrete structures can be carried out according to the predetermined reliability value on the basis of calculations of total probability when there is sufficient data on the fluctuation of the main factors in the calculation formulas.
