What are the regulations on grading the academic results of 12th-grade students in Vietnam?

According to Article 13 of the Regulations issued together with Circular 58/2011/TT-BGDDT (with the phrase replaced by Clause 6 and Clause 7, Article 2 of Circular 26/2020/TT-BGDDT), grading the academic results of 12th-grade students in Vietnam is specified as follows:

- Good grade, if it meets the following standards:

+ Grade point average of the subjects from 8.0 points or more in which average point of one of 03 subjects Mathematics, Literature, and foreign language shall be from 8.0 or more; separately for students of specialized classes of specialized high schools, it is required to add the condition of average point of the specialized subject from 8.0 or more;

+ There are no subjects that grade point average is below 6.5;

+ The subjects evaluated by comments reached S.

- Rather good grade, if it meets the following standard:

+ Grade point average of the subjects from 6.5 points or more in which average point of one of 03 subjects Mathematics, Literature, and foreign language shall be from 6.5 or more; separately for students of specialized classes of specialized high schools, it is required to add condition of average point of the specialized subject from 6.5 or more;

+ There are no subjects that grade point average is below 5.0;

+ The subjects evaluated by comments reached S.

- Medium grade, if it meets the following standard:

+ Grade point average of the subjects from 5.0 points or more in which average point of one of 03 subjects Mathematics, Literature, and foreign language shall be from 5.0 or more; separately for students of specialized classes of specialized high schools, it is required to add condition of average point of the specialized subject from 5.0 or more;

+ There are no subjects that grade point average is below 3.5;

+ The subjects evaluated by comments reached S.

- Weak grade: Grade point average of the subjects from 3.5 points or more, there are no subjects that grade point average is below 2.0.

- Poor grade: The remaining cases.

Note: If DTBhk or DTBcn reaches level of each type specified in clauses 1 and 2 of this Article but as a result of a only subject that is lower than the level prescribed for that type, so learning capacity should be ranked lower shall be adjusted as follows:

+ If DTBhk or DTBcn reaches G but as a result of a certain subject that must be down Medium grade, it shall be adjusted into R.

+ If DTBhk or DTBcn reaches G but as a result of a certain subject that must be down Weak grade, it shall be adjusted into Medium grade.

+ If DTBhk or DTBcn reaches R but as a result of a certain subject that must be down W, it shall be adjusted into M.

+ If DTBhk or DTBcn reaches R but as a result of a certain subject that must be down P, it shall be adjusted into W.

Thus, 12th-grade students in Vietnam shall have academic results graded at Good, Rather Good, Medium, Weak, and Poor grades.

What are the eligiblity requirements for 12th-grade students to be exempted from all papers of the high school graduation exam in Vietnam?

Under Article 36 of the Regulation on the high school graduation exam issued together with Circular 15/2020/TT-BGDDT, there are regulations on cases exempt from all papers of the high school graduation exam, including:

- A person chosen to become a member in the national team for the International or Regional Olympiad of academic subject shall be exempt from all papers of the high school graduation examination if he/she:

+ is chosen in the second semester of 12th grade;

+ has his/her conduct classified as Good and academic performance classified as Good or above in the 12th grade; and

+ is named in a list of exemption of the MOET.

- A person chosen to become a member in the national team for the International or Regional Olympiad of engineering or arts shall be exempt from all papers of the high school graduation examination if he/she:

+ is chosen in the second semester of 12th grade;

+ has his/her conduct classified as Average and academic performance classified as Average or above in the 12th grade; and

+ is named in an official dispatch on request for exemption and confirmation of training and taking test made by the recruiter sent to the DET before the date of high school graduation exam.

- People suffering from extremely severe disabilities and severe disabilities as prescribed in clause 1, clause 2 Article 3 of the Government’s Decree No. 28/2012/ND-CP dated April 10 2012; revolutionary activists infected with chemical toxins with the degree of impairment from 61% and above; offspring of revolutionary activists infected with chemical toxins with the degree of impairment from 61% and above must satisfy the following requirements:

+ In the case of disabled students who follow the general education program: They must finish the high school program and meet the requirements as prescribed in clause 2 Article 12 of this Regulation to take the exam; and have the certificate of disability issued by the competent authority;

+ In the case of disabled students who do not meet the requirements of the general education program: They shall have the certificate of the implementation of the individual education plan each year at high school level approved by the headmaster of the school at which they studied; and have the certificate of disability issued by a competent authority;

+ In the case of revolutionary activists and their children infected with chemical toxins: They must finish the high school program and meet the requirements to take the exam; and have the certificate of infection with chemical toxins with the working capacity loss from 61% and above issued by a competent authority.

Thus, 12th-grade students who are chosen to become members in the national team for the International or Regional Olympiad of academic subjects or who fall under cases of disabled students, revolutionary activists, or children infected with chemical toxins shall be exempt from all papers of the high school graduation exam.
