“In 2024, how many months is the summer vacation for teachers and students? Are students required to participate in summer activities in 2024?” - asked Mr. P (Binh Duong)

In 2024, how many months is the summer vacation for teachers and students in Vietnam?

For teachers:

Under Clause 1 Article 3 of Decree 84/2020/ND-CP, the summer vacation of teachers in Vietnam is prescribed as follows:

Summer vacation of teachers
1. Summer vacation of teachers:
a) Annual summer vacation of teachers of institutions for preschool education, institutions for general education, and special schools is 8 weeks, including annual permitted leave;
b) Annual summer vacation of teachers of vocational secondary schools and colleges is 6 weeks, including annual permitted leave;
c) Annual summer vacation of teachers of institutions of higher education shall comply with organizational and operational regulations of the institutions of higher education;
d) In case of any irregularity, emergency cases for prevention of natural disasters, diseases or other emergencies, summer vacation of teachers of institutions for preschool education, institutions for general education, special schools, vocational secondary schools and colleges shall be decided by Minister of Education and Training and Minister of Labor – War Invalids and Social Affairs depending on entitlement.

Thus, the summer vacation of teachers in Vietnam is 08 weeks.

For students:

Currently, there are no specific regulations on the summer vacation of students.

However, it is possible to base the time frame of previous school years on the summer vacation of students.

2021 - 2022 School Year:

- The earliest time for return to school was September 1, 2021. Particularly for grade 1, the earliest time for return to school was from August 23, 2021.

- The opening ceremony of the new school year was held on September 5, 2021.

- Semester I was finished by January 16, 2022, Semester II education plan was finished by May 25, 2022, and the school year was finished by May 31, 2022.

2022 - 2023 School Year:

- The earliest time for return to school was 01 week before the start date of school. Particularly for grade 1, the earliest time for return to school was 02 weeks before the start of school.

- The opening ceremony of the new school year was held on September 5, 2022.

- Semester I was finished by January 15, 2023, Semester II education plan was finished by May 25, 2023, and the school year was finished by May 31, 2023.

2023 - 2024 School Year:

- The earliest time for return to school was 01 week before the start date of school. Particularly for grade 1, the earliest time for return to school was 02 weeks before the start of school.

- The opening ceremony of the new school year was held on September 5, 2023.

- Semester I was finished by January 15, 2024, Semester II education plan was finished by May 25, 2024, and the school year was finished by May 31, 2024.

Thus, through the years, students take summer vacation at least from June 1 and usually return to school on September 1 and attend the opening ceremony of the new school year on September 5.

It is expected that in 2024, students will also take summer vacation from June 1, 2024 at the latest, start the school year in early September 2024, and attend the opening ceremony of the new school year on September 5, 2024. I.e. the summer vacation of students will be 3 months.

However, the start time of the new school year depends on the time frame for the 2024-2025 school year issued by the Ministry of Education and Training.

Are lower and upper secondary school students in Vietnam required to participate in summer activities in 2024?

(1) For 6,7,8,10, and 11 graders:

Under Article 13 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT on the assessment of lower and upper secondary school students, training during summer vacation for students is specified as follows:

Training during summer vacation
A student with Unqualified training results for the whole school year must undergo training during summer vacation.
2. Forms of training during summer vacation shall be decided by principals.
3. Based on forms of training during summer vacation, class advisors shall assign summer training tasks to students and inform students’ parents. At the end of the summer, if training tasks are considered completed by class advisors (reports on training progress and results must be produced and bear signatures of students' parents), class advisors shall request principals to conduct re-assessment of training results of the entire school year of students. Re-assessment results shall be used in place of training results of the entire school year which are used for considering grade advancement under Article 12 hereof.

(2) For 9 and 12 graders:

Under Article 17 of the Regulations on assessment and grading of lower and upper secondary school students promulgated together with Circular 58/2011/TT-BGDDT:

Training conduct in summer vacation
Students graded learning results of the school year from Medium or more but conduct of the school year graded weak, shall train more conduct during the summer vacation, the training forms shall be prescribed by the principal. Task of training during the summer vacation shall be sent notice to the family, government, unions of communes, wards and townships (referred to as commune-level) where students reside. At the end of summer vacation, if students are recognized as completed the task by the commune-level People's Committee, the class teacher shall propose the principal to permit re-classification of conduct; if obtained M grade, shall be passed.

Thus, based on the above regulations, students are not required to participate in summer activities in 2024.

Summer activities are also a form of training, compulsory only for the following students:
