If the result of any exam is under 3,5, will secondary school students in Vietnam re-exam?

For students in grades 8, 9, 11, 12 in the school year 2022-2023

According to the provisions of Article 16 of the Regulation issued together with Circular 58/2011/TT-BGDDT on re-examination of subjects as follows:

Re-examination of the subjects
Students graded conduct of the school year from Medium or more but learning capacity of school year graded weak, shall be selected a number of subjects with grade point average of the school year below 5.0 or with the NS grade for re-examination. The results of re-examination shall be replaced for the rating result of the school year of that subject to re-calculate the grade point average of the subjects of school year and re-classified learning capacity; if obtained M grade, shall be passed.

In Clause 4, Article 13 of the Regulation promulgated together with Circular 58/2011/TT-BGDDT (amended by Clause 6, Article 2 of Circular 26/2020/TT-BGDĐT) stipulating the standard for grading semester and the school year:

Weak grade: Grade point average of the subjects from 3.5 points or more, there are no subjects that grade point average is below 2.0.

For students in grades 6, 7, 10 in the school year 2022-2023

According to the provisions of Article 14 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT on the Re-examination and re-assessment of subjects during summer break, then:

Re-examination and re-assessment of subjects during summer break
Students who are ineligible for grade advancement while obtaining Qualified training results for the entire school year and Unqualified learning results for the entire school year may receive re-assessment of learning results of subjects in which the students achieve Unqualified results (for subjects assessed via feedback) and subjects with DTBmcn less than 5.0 (for subjects assessed via both feedback and scores). Re-assessment results of a subject shall be used in place of learning results for the entire year of respective subject for considering grade advancement under Article 12 hereof.

Accordingly, the learning results are specified in Article 9 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT as follows:

a) For subjects assessed via feedback
- In a semester, learning results of each subject of a student shall be concluded as either: “Đạt” (Qualified), or “Chưa đạt” (Unqualified).
+ Qualified: When the student attends all examination and assessment under this Circular and obtain assessment at Qualified category.
+ Unqualified: Remaining cases.
- In a school year, learning results of each subject of a student shall be concluded as either: “Đạt” (Qualified), or “Chưa đạt” (Unqualified).
+ Qualified: Learning results of the 2nd semester is placed in Qualified category.
+ Unqualified: Learning results of the 2nd semester is placed in Unqualified category.

When do secondary school students in Vietnam advance to the next grade?

For students in grades 8, 9, 11, 12 in the school year 2022-2023

According to the provisions of Article 15 of the Regulation promulgated together with Circular 58/2011/TT-BGDDT, students who meet the following conditions shall be passed their grades:

- Conduct and learning capacity from M or more;

- Off from class is not more than 45 sessions in a school year (on leave allowed or not allowed, on leave continuously or several times combined).

For students in grades 6, 7, 10 in the school year 2022-2023

According to the provisions of Article 12 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT, students who fully meet the following conditions may advance to the next grade or be recognized as to have completed lower education program or upper education program:

- Training results of the entire school year (including re-assessment results after training during summer break according to Article 13 hereof) are Qualified or higher.

- Learning results of the entire school year (including re-assessment results of all subjects according to Article 14 hereof) is Qualified or higher.

- Number of days leave does not exceed 45 half-days (calculated according to education plans which is 1 half-day for every day under formal education plan, including permitted leave, unpermitted leave, continuous leave, and intermittent leave).

When do secondary school students in Vietnam fail to advance to the next grade?

For students in grades 8, 9, 11, 12 in the school year 2022-2023

According to the provisions of Article 15 of the Regulation issued together with Circular 58/2011/TT-BGDDT,

Students of one of the following cases shall not be passed their grades:
a) Off from class is more than 45 sessions in a school year (on leave allowed or not allowed, on leave continuously or several times combined);
b) Learning capacity of school year reached Poor grade or learning capacity and conduct of school year reached Weak grade;
c) After being reexamined a number of subjects, subjects assessed by scoring with GPA below 5.0 or the subjects assessed by comment ranked NS, to re-classify the learning capacity for school year but still not satisfactory medium grade.
d) Conduct of school year reached weak grade, but not completing the training mission in the summer holidays so still be graded weak on conduct.

For students in grades 6, 7, 10 in the school year 2022-2023

According to the provisions of Article 12 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT, a student who does not meet all eligibility under Clause 1 of this Article are not allowed to advance to the next grade or recognized as to have completed lower secondary education level or upper secondary education level.
