Vietnam: How much is the difference between floor and benchmark scores in 2022? How are benchmarks reviewed and published?
What is the floor point? What is the benchmark point? Analysis of floor points and benchmarks 2022 in Vietnam?
The floor score is the minimum score a candidate must achieve for universities or colleges to use as a basis for admissions consideration, to know whether he or she is eligible to apply for admission to those universities or colleges. In other words, candidates must have a test score equal to or higher than the floor score to be considered for NV1 and submit NV2 and NV3 admissions documents.
The benchmark score will help the schools determine the admission score based on the admission criteria and test scores of candidates.
According to Clause 8, Article 2 of the Regulations promulgated together with Circular 08/2022/TT-BGDĐT, it stipulates that: Admission criteria are factors used to determine candidates' admission conditions, mainly based on academic achievements, practice or test results, assessment of candidates; usually converted into scores for admission (review points) including priority points.
Thus, the floor score is one of the admission criteria specified above.
The benchmark score, also known as the matriculation score (of an industry group, an industry, or a training program) is the threshold score at which candidates (who have registered their desire to enter that industry or training program) have a score of equal or higher will be eligible for admission.
Thus, the floor score is a prerequisite for candidates to consider their aspirations to that university, the benchmark score is the score that decides whether the candidate will pass the school or not

How are benchmarks reviewed and published in Vietnam?
According to Clause 3, Article 20 of the Regulation promulgated together with Circular 08/2022/TT-BGDDT stipulating:
"Article 20. Selection and processing of aspirations according to the general plan
...
3. Admission rules
a) The matriculation score is determined so that the number of recruits according to each branch or training program is consistent with the number of announced quotas, but not lower than the entry threshold;
b) For a training discipline (or a training program) according to a method and combination of subjects, all candidates are considered and selected equally according to the points of consideration regardless of the priority order of the registration aspirations, except for the case specified at Point c of this Clause;
c) In case many candidates have the same score at the end of the list, the training institution may use the secondary criterion of aspiration order (to select candidates with a higher aspiration order);
d) The use of priority points for areas and subjects for admission must be consistent and synchronized with the provisions on priority points specified in Article 7 of this Regulation.
4. After each selection cycle, the training institution uploads to the system a list of candidates expected to be eligible for admission to the disciplines and training programs (according to the enrollment methods). The aspiration processing system will automatically remove from the list of low aspirations of candidates who are eligible for multiple aspirations, returning the list of candidates expected to be admitted according to the highest aspirations.
5. Based on the results of the aspiration processing, the training institution repeats the selection process in the next cycle, adjusting the matriculation scores to match the quota within the prescribed time limit. In the last cycle, the training institution decides the admission score for the disciplines and training programs (according to the enrollment methods) and uploads the list of (official) candidates who are eligible for admission. On the basis of the final aspiration processing results, the training institution shall decide on the list of successful candidates for the training courses and programs.
6. The training institution shall announce the matriculation scores (and the conditions and sub-criteria if any) to the disciplines and training programs according to the enrollment methods; organize for candidates to look up individual's examination results on the website of the training institution (or the group of training institutions that coordinate the selection)."
Thus, the benchmark is determined based on the published number of entrance criteria of the universities.
How much is the difference between the floor and the benchmark score in 2022 in Vietnam?
Most universities and colleges will have higher admission standards than the floor. Therefore, the difference between the floor and the benchmark cannot be said exactly.
Because the benchmark is determined based on the published input number of universities but based on the competitiveness of the benchmark, it also depends on the industry, with the industry having a higher benchmark than the 6-7 floor. points, there are industry benchmarks the school announced the difference between the floor points to 9-10 points. However, there are also many schools due to large targets and low competition, so the standard score may be equal to the floor.
According to the registration data for the high school graduation exam of the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam (Education and Training), as of 5:00 p.m. on May 13, 2022, the number of candidates registered for the exam was 1,001,011. The number of candidates registered for the online exam is 934,186 (accounting for 93.32%); the number of candidates registered for the direct exam was 66,827 (accounting for 6.68%).
It is predicted that compared to 2021, the test scores in 2022 in some subjects will slightly decrease, so the benchmark in 2022 compared to 2021 is not expected to differ much and may decrease slightly in some industries.
