Vietnam: Does going into the curve need to turn on the turn signal? How many meters should turn on the turn signal before redirecting?
Is it necessary to turn on the indicator when going into the curve in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Article 15 of the 2008 Law on Road Traffic of Vietnam, it provides as follows:
Article 15. Change of direction
1. When wishing to change direction, the operator shall slow down and give a signal of the turning direction.
2. While changing direction, the driver or operator of a special-use vehicle shall allow pedestrians and bicycle riders moving on the road sections reserved for them to pass, give way to oncoming vehicles and shall change direction only when seeing that his/her vehicle does not obstruct or endanger people and other vehicles.
3. In residential areas, the driver may make U-turns only at intersections and places with a sign permitting U-turns.
4. It is prohibited to make U-turns at road sections reserved for pedestrians to cross, on bridges, at bridge heads, under flyovers, at undergrounds, in road tunnels, on expressways, at level crossings between a road and a railroad track, on narrow roads, steep roads or on bends with insufficient visibility.
At the same time, pursuant to Article 13 of the Law on Road Traffic of Vietnam 2008, it provides as follows:
Article 13. Use of lanes
1. On a road with many lanes in the same direction of traffic, distinguished from one another by the lane-dividing markings, operators shall keep their vehicles on one lane and may only change lanes at places where it is so permitted; when changing lane, they shall give signals indicating their intention and ensure safety.
2. On a one-way road with a lane-dividing marking, rudimentary vehicles shall keep to the right lane close to the edge of the road while motor vehicles and special-use vehicles move on the left lane.
3. Vehicles moving on the road at a lower speed shall keep to the right.
When participating in traffic that follows a curve, the vehicle is still considered to be traveling on a stretch of road.
In addition, pursuant to the current Decree 100/2019/ND-CP on sanctioning administrative violations in the field of road and railway traffic, there are no regulations on sanctioning administrative violations for the act of not turning on the turn signal when entering the curve.
In short, when following the curve, turning on the turn signal is not mandatory, this is only encouraged to be done and if not done, there is no penalty.
Vietnam: Does going into the curve need to turn on the turn signal? How many meters should turn on the turn signal before redirecting?
Are indicators required to be turned on according to Vietnamese regulations?
Pursuant to Clause 1, Article 15 of the 2008 Law on Road Traffic of Vietnam stipulates that when the driver wants to change direction, the driver of the vehicle must slow down and have a turn signal.
At the same time, Clause 1, Article 13 of the 2008 Law on Road Traffic of Vietnam also stipulates that the driver of the vehicle must let the vehicle go in one lane and can only change lanes where permitted and when changing lanes, there must be a warning signal and must ensure safety.
Thus, when changing directions or changing lanes, the driver of the vehicle is required to turn on the turn signal.
At the same time, based on Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, the error of not turning on the turn signal when redirecting is penalized as follows:
For cars:
- Pursuant to Point a, Clause 2, Article 5 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, the act of changing lanes without warning signals: Fine from 400,000 - 600,000 VND.
- Pursuant to Point c, Clause 3, Article 5 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP. Diverting without a turn signal (except for the case of driving the car in the curved direction of the road section where the road does not intersect at the same level): Fine from 800,000 VND - 01 million VND.
- Pursuant to Point g Clause 5 Article 5 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP (amended by Point d Clause 34 Article 2 of Decree 123/2021/ND-CP), changing lanes without warning signals when running on the highway: Fine from 04-06 million VND.
For this act, based on Points b and c, Clause 11, Article 5 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP (amended by Point c, Clause 34, Article 2 of Decree 123/2021/ND-CP) provides for additional sanctions as follows:
+ Deprivation of the right to use a driver's license from 01 month to 03 months
+ Deprivation of the right to use a driver's license from 02 months to 04 months if committing a violation that causes a traffic accident
For motorcycles:
- Pursuant to Point a, Clause 3, Article 6 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP (amended by Point a, Clause 4, Article 2 of Decree 123/2021/ND-CP), the diversion does not have a turn signal (except for the case of driving a vehicle in the curved direction of the road section where the road does not intersect at the same level): Fine from VND 400,000 - 600,000
- Pursuant to Point i Clause 1 Article 6 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP changing lanes without warning signals: Fine from 100,000 - 200,000 VND.
Thus, currently, the law stipulates that when diverting vehicles, vehicle operators must pay attention to observe and warn other road users about their diversion.
How many meters should turn on the turn signal before redirecting in Vietnam?
Currently, the law does not specify how many meters to turn on the turn signal before diverting. However, the driver of the vehicle must not turn on the turn signal too slowly when changing directions. This can cause safety and traffic accidents when there is an unexpected diversion of the vehicle.
At the same time, the act of turning the turn signal too slowly or turning a segment before turning on the turn signal is considered a violation of the law and is sanctioned according to the regulations as analyzed above.
