Candidates for the national excellent student exam
1. For the national excellent student selection exam:
a) High school students who have a conduct (or morality) and academic (or academic ranking) rating of at least "Good" based on the final results of the semester (or school year) immediately preceding the exam and are selected into the team of their testing unit;
b) Each candidate is only allowed to participate in one subject exam in one academic year.
2. For the Olympic team selection exam:
High school students who fall into one of the following categories:
a) Selected by the Ministry of Education and Training from among the students who have won awards in the national excellent student selection exam in the same academic year based on the principle of highest scores, ensuring that the number of selected students for each subject does not exceed eight (08) times the number of students needed for the national team to compete in the international Olympic of that subject;
b) Did not participate in the national excellent student selection exam in the same academic year but were members of the national team for the regional Olympic; members of the national team for the international Olympic in the immediately preceding academic year.
Thus, starting November 25, 2023, candidates for the national excellent student exam must meet the following conditions:
- Currently attending high school;- Have a conduct (or morality) and academic (or academic ranking) rating of at least "Good" based on the final results of the semester (or school year) immediately preceding the exam and are selected into the team of their testing unit.
Note: Each candidate is only allowed to participate in one subject exam in one academic year.

When is the deadline to submit the list of candidates for the national excellent student selection exam?
Article 11 of the National Excellent Student Exam Regulations issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT prescribes the establishment of exam teams as follows:
Establishment of exam teams
1. For the national excellent student selection exam:
a) The exam units establish teams to participate in their unit's exam, ensuring full compliance with the requirements outlined in Clause 1, Article 4, and Clause 1, Article 12 of these Regulations.
b) The units submit the registration of subjects, the number of candidates for each subject, and the list of candidates for each subject to the Quality Management Department at least 30 days before the exam date. After this deadline, no adjustments to the registered list of candidates will be made.
2. For the Olympic team selection exam: The Ministry of Education and Training conducts the selection and summoning of candidates to participate in the exam, meeting the requirements outlined in Clause 2, Article 4, and Clause 2, Article 12 of these Regulations.
Thus, the deadline to submit the list of candidates for the national excellent student selection exam is at least 30 days before the exam date.
After this deadline, no adjustments to the registered list of candidates will be made.
What is the maximum number of candidates that can be registered for each subject in the national excellent student exam?
Article 12 of the National Excellent Student Exam Regulations issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT prescribes the quantity of candidates as follows:
Quantity of candidates
1. For the national excellent student selection exam: Each exam unit can register up to 10 candidates for each subject team (except for exam units in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, which can register up to 20 candidates for each team).
2. For the Olympic team selection exam: The number of candidates for each subject annually is summoned by the Ministry of Education and Training, meeting the requirements outlined in Clause 2, Article 4 of these Regulations.
Thus, each exam unit can only register up to 10 candidates for each subject in the national excellent student exam.

Article 13 of the National Excellent Student Exam Regulations issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT prescribes the required documents for candidates participating in the national excellent student selection exam from November 25, 2023, as follows:
- Decision by the head of the exam unit on the establishment of teams to participate in the national excellent student selection exam (attached with the list of students for each team);
- The academic records for the level (in the case the exam is organized before the end of the first semester of the school year) or
The results of conduct (or morality) and academic (or academic ranking) ratings for the semester immediately preceding the exam for each candidate, certified by the school principal (in the case the exam is organized immediately after the end of the first semester of the school year).
