Does the Duration of Police Service Match the Duration of Military Service?
According to Article 8 of the People's Public Security Law 2018, the obligation to join the People's Public Security is stipulated as follows:
Obligation to Join the People's Public Security
1. Citizens performing the obligation to join the People's Public Security are fulfilling the obligation to protect the Homeland within the armed forces. Annually, the People's Public Security selects citizens of conscription age to serve for a term of 24 months. The Minister of Public Security can decide to extend the service term of non-commissioned officers and conscripts by no more than 6 months in the following cases:
a) To ensure combat readiness;
b) While performing tasks of disaster prevention, disease control, rescue, and relief.
2. The procedure for selecting citizens to perform the obligation to join the People's Public Security is applied similarly to the selection of citizens for military service.
3. The Government of Vietnam stipulates the details of Clause 2 of this Article.
Thus, according to the above regulation, the People's Public Security selects citizens of conscription age to serve for a term of 24 months.
However, in certain cases mentioned in the above regulation, the Minister of Public Security can decide to extend the service term of non-commissioned officers and conscripts by no more than 6 months.
According to Article 21 of the Military Service Law 2015, it is stipulated as follows:
Term of Service of Non-Commissioned Officers and Soldiers
1. The term of service in peacetime for non-commissioned officers and soldiers is 24 months.
2. The Minister of National Defense can decide to extend the service term of non-commissioned officers and soldiers by no more than 6 months in the following cases:
a) To ensure combat readiness;
b) While performing tasks of disaster prevention, disease control, rescue, and relief.
3. The term of service for non-commissioned officers and soldiers in wartime or emergency defense situations is implemented according to the general mobilization or local mobilization orders.
Usually, currently, military service also lasts for 24 months.
The Minister of National Defense can decide to extend the service term of non-commissioned officers and soldiers by no more than 6 months according to the law.
Therefore, it can be seen that both police service and military service periods are 24 months in peacetime.

Is Military Service Required After Performing Police Service?
According to Clause 3, Article 4 of the Military Service Law 2015, the performance of military service is stipulated as follows:
Military Service
1. Military service is the honorable duty of citizens serving in the People's Army. Performing military service includes active service and service in the reserve force of the People's Army.
2. Citizens of conscription age, irrespective of ethnicity, social strata, belief, religion, educational level, occupation, or place of residence, must perform military service according to this Law.
3. Citizens serving in the Coast Guard and performing the obligation to join the People's Public Security are considered to be performing active military service.
4. Citizens in one of the following cases are recognized as having fulfilled the obligation of active military service in peacetime:

According to the above regulation, citizens serving in the Coast Guard and performing the obligation to join the People's Public Security are considered to be performing active military service. Therefore, those who have performed police service are not required to perform additional military service.
