Pursuant to Article 16 of the Vietnam Law on Professional Military Personnel, defense workers and officials 2015 stipulates the ranks of professional military personnel as follows:
Military ranks of professional servicemen are defined in proportion to technical and professional competence and pay level, including:
- Senior lieutenant-colonel;
- Lieutenant-colonel;
- Major;
- Captain;
- Senior lieutenant;
- Lieutenant;
- Second lieutenant;
Highest ranks of professional servicemen are composed of:
- Senior lieutenant-colonel (high-ranking);
- Lieutenant – colonel (middle-ranking);
- Major (primary-ranking);

How is the salary corresponding to the rank of professional soldier regulated in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Article 4 of Circular 170/2016/TT-BQP stipulating the salary corresponding to the rank of professional military personnel as follows:
- The rank of Professional Military Lieutenant corresponds to a salary with a coefficient of less than 3.95.
- The rank of Professional Military Lieutenant corresponds to a salary from a factor of 3.95 to less than 4.45.
- The rank of Professional Military Lieutenant corresponds to a salary from a coefficient of 4.45 to less than 4.90.
- The rank of professional military captain corresponds to a salary from a factor of 4.90 to less than 5.30.
- The rank of Major of professional military personnel corresponds to a salary from a factor of 5.30 to less than 6.10.
- The rank of Lieutenant Colonel of professional soldiers corresponds to a salary from a coefficient of 6.10 to less than 6.80.
- The rank of Colonel of professional military personnel corresponds to a salary of 6.80 or higher.
Who is selected for professional military personnel in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Article 14 of the Vietnam Law on Professional Military Personnel, defense workers and officials 2015 stipulates that the subjects to be recruited professional military personnel include:
- Officers of the Vietnam People’s Army with current positions as officers being no longer required in case of change of personnel structure;
- Non-commissioned officers, soldiers who are no longer on active service, currently serving on probation in the army;
- National defense workers and officials;
Qualifications for selection and recruitment:
- Have political and ethical credentials, good health, clear curriculum vitae and volunteer to serve in the army;
- Have degrees, certificates of technical and professional competence in accordance with titles of professional servicemen;
What kind of professional military titles in Vietnam are people with a university diploma or higher classified as?
Pursuant to Article 15 of the Vietnam Law on Professional Military Personnel, Defense Workers and Officials 2015 provides as follows:
Article 15. Grading, promotion and shifting titles of professional servicemen
1. Professional servicemen who have technical and professional competence in accordance with titles currently held shall be graded as follows:
a) High-ranking group (Group I) composed of professional servicemen having university degrees and over; high-ranking group (Group II) composed of professional servicemen having college degrees;
b) Middle-ranking group composed of professional servicemen having intermediate professional degrees;
c) Primary-ranking group consisted of professional servicemen having primary certificates;
2. Professional servicemen who have successfully completed assigned duties, have political and ethical credentials, have appropriate degrees and qualifications to hold titles similar to professional servicemen ofhigher ranks in the same technical and professional area shall be considered for promotion;
3. In case of need, professional servicemen may be considered for a shift to new titles if they meet professional requirements of such titles.
Accordingly, professional military personnel with a university diploma or higher are classified as high-class professional military personnel of group I.
How are the term and ages of active service of professional military personnel regulated?
Pursuant to Article 17 of the Vietnam Law on Professional Military Personnel, Defense Workers and Officials 2015, the term and age of active service of professional military personnel are as follows:
- Duration of active service during peace time:
- At least six years since the decision to convert into a professional serviceman is issued;
- To the end of age limit as prescribed in Clause 2, this Article;
-Maximum age limit for active service by rank:
- Company grade: male (52 years old), female (52 years old);
- Major, lieutenant-colonel: male (54 years old), female (54 years old);
- Senior lieutenant-colonel: male (56 years old), female (55 years old);
