Exemptions and Discounts for Train Tickets during the 2024 Lunar New Year
According to the provisions of Article 23 of Decree 65/2018/ND-CP, the following groups are eligible for ticket discounts during the 2024 Lunar New Year:
(1) Individuals involved in revolutionary activities before the August 19, 1945 General Uprising.
(2) Vietnamese Heroic Mothers.
(3) Wounded soldiers, and those entitled to the same policies as wounded soldiers.
(4) Individuals involved in the resistance movement affected by chemical agents.
(5) Individuals with severe disabilities, and those with heavy disabilities.
(6) Elderly people.
(7) Other groups as prescribed by law.
Ticket exemptions and discounts for individuals with social policies are implemented according to the provisions of Articles 24 and 25 of Decree 65/2018/ND-CP as follows:
(1) Ticket discounts apply to the following groups:
- A 90% ticket discount applies to individuals involved in revolutionary activities before the August 19, 1945 General Uprising; Vietnamese Heroic Mothers;
- A 30% ticket discount applies to wounded soldiers, those entitled to wounded soldier policies; chemical agent victims;
- Ticket discounts for individuals with severe disabilities; those with heavy disabilities; and elderly persons are implemented in accordance with the laws on persons with disabilities and the elderly.
(2) Ticket discounts are applied based on the actual ticket prices of the seat type and train type used by the individual.
(3) Ticket exemptions and discounts for individuals with social policies outlined in Article 23 of Decree 65/2018/ND-CP for international train services are carried out according to the regulations of international treaties to which the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a member.
(4) Ticket exemption and discount rates for individuals with social policies outlined in Clause 7 of Article 23 of Decree 65/2018/ND-CP are implemented as prescribed by law.
(5) If an individual with social policies is eligible for more than one ticket discount policy, only the highest discount policy will apply.
(6) Individuals eligible for ticket exemption or discount must present certification of their eligibility and identification documents when purchasing tickets and when boarding the train.
Additionally, based on specific conditions and timeframes, railway transport businesses may expand ticket exemption and discount eligibility to children based on age and to other passenger groups; discount rates are as prescribed by the business.

How Many Days is the 2024 Lunar New Year Holiday?
According to Notice 5015/TB-LDTBXH 2023, officials and public employees, and laborers of administrative, non-business agencies, political organizations, and socio-political organizations (hereinafter referred to as officials and public employees) will have a 7-day Lunar New Year holiday in 2024 from:
Thursday, February 08, 2024 (corresponding to the 29th of the last lunar month of the Year of the Cat) to the end of Wednesday, February 14, 2024 (corresponding to the 5th of the first lunar month of the Year of the Dragon).
For students, the 2024 Lunar New Year holiday schedule will depend on the regulations of each locality and school.
For instance, students in Ho Chi Minh City per Decision 3260/QD-UBND 2023: The Lunar New Year holiday will begin from February 05, 2024 (26th of the last lunar month) to the end of February 18, 2024 (9th of the first lunar month).
Laborers will have a 2024 Lunar New Year holiday based on one of the following three options chosen by the employer:
(1) Choose 1 day at the end of the Year of the Cat and 4 days at the beginning of the Year of the Dragon
(2) Choose 2 days at the end of the Year of the Cat and 3 days at the beginning of the Year of the Dragon
(3) Choose 3 days at the end of the Year of the Cat and 2 days at the beginning of the Year of the Dragon.
How to Buy 2024 Lunar New Year Train Tickets Online
Currently, besides purchasing tickets at stations and agencies, passengers can buy train tickets online through the following channels:
- Purchase on the websites: dsvn.vn, vetau.com.vn; mobile app for ticket sales.
- Purchase via electronic wallet applications such as Momo, ViettelPay...
- Call the ticket booking hotlines: 19001520 (Saigon), 0258.3822113 (Nha Trang), 0236.3823810 (Da Nang), 024.38220202 (Hanoi).
Vietnam Railways Corporation has also notified about payment and invoice lookup when buying tickets online as follows:
* Payment methods when passengers successfully book seats:
- Online payment;
- Direct payment at railway stations, ticket sales points, and agencies of Vietnam Railways.
- Payment at VIB Bank transaction points nationwide.
- Payment at collection points at post offices under Vietnam Post Corporation (VN Post), on electronic wallet applications, and bank applications with a “ticket payment” feature.
* Payment deadlines:
- For online payments: the payment period is within 30 minutes from the successful booking time;
- For post-payment tickets successfully reserved within the following time frames:
+ From 08:00 on October 20, 2023, to the end of October 29, 2023, the payment period after successful booking is within 24 hours;
+ From 00:00 on October 30, 2023, the payment period after successful booking is 12 hours (as currently).
- For tickets successfully reserved without payment within the stipulated periods mentioned above, the reserved seats will be released back to the ticket sales system randomly.
* Invoice lookup:
- Passengers who book tickets via the website: When passengers need an invoice, they should enter all invoice information for the system to generate an electronic invoice.
- Passengers who buy tickets at stations, ticket sales points, and agencies: When passengers need an invoice, they should provide all invoice information to the ticket clerk to generate an electronic invoice.
- Passengers can access the websites: http://hoadon.vtdshn.vn, http://hoadon.duongsatsaigon.vn to look up invoices.
