Military service is the honorable duty of citizens serving in the People's Army. Performing military service includes active service and service in the reserve force of the People's Army.

Citizens within the age range for military service, regardless of ethnicity, social status, belief, religion, educational level, profession, or residence, must perform military service according to the regulations.

Additionally, based on the provisions in Article 6 of the 2015 Military Service Law regarding the performance of military service by citizens as follows:

Obligatory Active Service

1. Male citizens of the age eligible for military service are obligated to serve in active duty in the People's Army.

2. Female citizens within the age range for military service in peacetime, if they volunteer and the army has the need, they may serve in active duty.

Thus, according to the above regulations, male citizens must perform military service within the age range stipulated by law. In other words, this is a mandatory requirement for male citizens.

For female citizens, the 2015 Military Service Law extends the provisions, allowing female citizens within the stipulated age range, if they voluntarily perform military service and the army has the need, to enlist. This provision does not mandate female citizens within the age range for military service to enlist. Female citizens in peacetime enlist voluntarily and are accepted by the state.

- The age for conscription is currently stipulated in Clause 1, Article 4 of Circular 148/2018/TT-BQP as follows:

+ Citizens from 18 years old to the end of 25 years old.

+ Male citizens who have been trained at college or university level who had postponed military service during a training course at one training level are selected and called for military service until the end of 27 years old.

What is the regulation on the timing of conscription?

Based on the provisions stipulated in Article 33 of the 2015 Military Service Law, regarding the number of times and timing of calling citizens for military service and fulfilling the obligation to join the People's Police Force in the year as follows:

Number of Times and Timing of Calling Citizens for Military Service and Fulfilling the Obligation to Join the People's Police Force in the Year

Annually, citizens are called for military service and fulfilling the obligation to join the People's Police Force once in February or March; in necessary cases for defense and security reasons, citizens may be called for military service and fulfilling the obligation to join the People's Police Force for the second time. For localities with disasters or dangerous epidemics, the timing for conscription and fulfilling the obligation to join the People's Police Force can be adjusted.

Thus, according to the above regulations, conscription is conducted once a year in February or March. In necessary cases for defense and security reasons, citizens may be called for conscription and fulfilling the obligation to join the People's Police Force for the second time.

Citizens should refer to the conscription orders from their localities to perform the conscription at the correct time.
