May trade union funds in Vietnam cover expenditures on sports teams such as expenses for protective gear and meals?
Pursuant to Point 2.4, Clause 2, Article 6 of the Regulations promulgated together with Decision 4290/QD-TLD in 2022 on internal trade union budget expenditures as follows:

2.4. Expenditure on cultural, sport.
- Expenditure on supporting the movements for building cultural entities; preventing and fighting social evils for trade unionists and employees; expenditure on employees who take part in cultural and arts activities; expenditure on commendation and reward for review of cultural and sport activities as well as the prevention and fighting against social evils at internal trade unions.
- Expenditure on purchase of facilities for cultural, arts and sports activities.
- Expenditure on gratuity to the organization committee, athletes and actors participating in the art performance, sports competition organized by internal trade union and the superior trade union of all levels of internal trade union; expenditure on commendation and reward for collectives or individuals achieving prizes in performance and sports day organized by internal trade union.
2.5. Expenditure on dissemination of information about gender and gender equality
- Expenditure on dissemination of information about gender and gender equality, which shall be integrated with activities about population, reproductive health, family planning, prevention and fighting against family violence.
- Expenditure on purchasing kindergarten appliances and facilities at these entities (if any); supporting trade unionists and employees whose children are learning at such kindergartens.
- Expenditure on propagating and organizing activities on the occasion of Women’s Day (March 8), Vietnamese Women’s Day (October 20), Vietnamese Family Day (June 28), International Day of Happiness (March 20) and Population Day (December 26).
- Expenditure on the operations of the board of feminine housework at public level, Club of feminine housework at internal trade union level; the organization of competitions for well-done feminine housework candidates and emulation contests for candidates who are excellent at work and perfect at home.
2.6. Expenditure on Congress of internal trade unions, labor associations, including: decorations, celebrations, handouts, participant’s fees, drinking water, conferences ..etc.
Thus, based on the above regulations, trade union funds are used to sponsor the purchase of sports equipment. Therefore, trade union funds in Vietnam may cover expenditures on sports teams such as expenses for protective gear and meals...
What are the benefits for trade unionists in Vietnam?
Pursuant to the provisions of Article 18 of the 2012 Trade Union Law as follows:
Rights of trade unionists
1. Requesting Trade Union to represent, protect legal and legitimate rights and interests upon being violated.
2. Being informed, diccusing, proposing and voting affairs of Trade Union; being informed of lines, guidelines, policies of the Party and law of the State related to Trade Union, employees; regulations of Trade Union.
3. Self-nominating, nominating, and voting the agency of Trade Union leaders under regulations of the Charter of Vietnamese Trade Union, questioning leaders of Trade Union; proposing for handling Trade Union’s cadres having mistakes.
4. Being consulted of law, free legal aiding on labor law and Trade Union law.

6. Participating in activities of culture, sport, travel organized by Trade Union.

Are employees in Vietnam required to join trade unions?
- Pursuant to the provisions of Clause 1, Article 170 of the 2019 Labor Code on the right to establish, join and participate in representative organizations of employees as follows:
Every employee has the right to establish, join and participate in activities of trade union in accordance with the Trade Union Law.
-Pursuant to the provisions of Clause 1, Article 5 of the 2012 Trade Union Law on the rights of establishing, participating in and operating Trade Union as follows:
Employees are Vietnamese persons working in agencies, organizations, and enterprises shall have rights to establish, participate in and operate Trade Union.
Thus, based on the above regulations, joining a union is the right of employees. Therefore, it is not mandatory for employees to join trade unions.
