How many subjects will elementary students study in the academic year 2024-2025 according to the new general education program?
According to Article 2 of Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the implementation roadmap of the General Education Program is as follows:
- From the academic year 2020-2021 for Grade 1.- From the academic year 2021-2022 for Grades 2 and 6.- From the academic year 2022-2023 for Grades 3, 7, and 10.- From the academic year 2023-2024 for Grades 4, 8, and 11.- From the academic year 2024-2025 for Grades 5, 9, and 12.
Therefore, from the academic year 2024-2025, elementary students from Grade 1 to Grade 5 will study according to the new general education program.
The new general education program includes the General Program and the subject and educational activity programs. The new general education program is divided into two phases: basic education (from Grades 1 to 9) and career orientation education (from Grades 10 to 12).
The system of subjects and educational activities in the general education program includes mandatory subjects and educational activities, elective subjects for career orientation (referred to as elective subjects), and optional subjects.
The actual learning time in an academic year is equivalent to 35 weeks.
Educational institutions may organize one session per day or two sessions per day of teaching. Educational institutions organizing either one session per day or two sessions per day must implement the mandatory unified educational content across all educational institutions nationwide.
To be specific: according to Section IV of the General Education Program issued alongside Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT regarding the overall subject program of the educational program for elementary, lower secondary (THCS), and upper secondary (THPT) levels:
Educational content at the elementary level includes 11 mandatory subjects and educational activities and 2 optional subjects:
- Mandatory subjects: Vietnamese; Mathematics; Ethics; Foreign Language 1 (in Grades 3, 4, 5); Natural and Social Sciences (in Grades 1, 2, 3); History and Geography (in Grades 4, 5); Science (in Grades 4, 5); Informatics and Technology (in Grades 3, 4, 5); Physical Education; Arts (Music, Arts); Experiential Activities.- 2 optional subjects: Ethnic Minority Language, Foreign Language 1 (in Grades 1, 2).- Two-session-a-day teaching time, each day not exceeding 7 periods; each period lasts 35 minutes. Educational institutions unable to organize two sessions per day follow the educational plan as guided by the Ministry of Education and Training.

The elementary education program helps students form and develop fundamental factors that lay the foundation for harmonious physical and mental development, qualities, and competencies; primarily focusing on education about self-values, family, community, necessary habits, and discipline in studying and living.
