On the morning of March 1, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, announced that the Department has planned the public high school entrance exam for the academic year 2023-2024 on June 6 and 7. This schedule is one week earlier than previous years as the high school graduation exam is set to be held one week earlier this year. To ensure better organization of the high school graduation exam, the Department of Education and Training has proposed organizing the public high school entrance exam earlier.
The Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City will soon submit the schedule to the City People's Committee for decision and announcement, allowing students and teachers to adequately prepare for the exam.
In 2023, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City enhances the application of digital transformation. Therefore, all registrations for the grade 10 entrance exam, including 3 regular aspirations, specialized aspirations, and integrated aspirations, will be conducted online.
This year, Ho Chi Minh City has approximately 100,000 ninth graders, and public high schools are expected to admit 70% of the ninth-grade graduates into the public grade 10.
On February 14, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City announced that the structure and differentiation of the grade 10 entrance exam for the academic year 2023-2024 will remain unchanged. Students will still sit for 3 subjects: Mathematics and Literature (each subject for 120 minutes) and English (90 minutes). The total score for the 3 subjects is not weighted.
The Literature exam, lasting 120 minutes, consists of three parts: Reading Comprehension (3 points), Social Argumentation (3 points), and Literary Argumentation (4 points). The Mathematics exam, lasting 120 minutes, retains the structure with 70% of questions at the recognition and understanding levels, and 30% at the application and higher application levels.
The English exam, lasting 90 minutes, includes 40 multiple-choice questions. The exam content is similar to last year, focusing on the grammar and vocabulary topics from the ninth-grade curriculum. The exam does not emphasize grammar but leans towards skills, application, and vocabulary. The English exam comprises 10-15% advanced-level questions to differentiate candidates.

Which candidates are directly admitted to grade 10?
According to Article 7 of the Regulations issued with Circular 11/2014/TT-BGDDT (some terms were abolished by Article 2 Circular 05/2018/TT-BGDDT; several provisions have been amended and supplemented by Clause 3, Clause 4 of Article 1 Circular 05/2018/TT-BGDDT and Article 1 Circular 18/2014/TT-BGDDT) stipulates as follows:
Direct Admission, Priority Policies
1. The following candidates are directly admitted to high school:
a) Students from ethnic high schools;
b) Students from ethnic groups with very few people;
c) Disabled students;
d) Students who have won national and international awards in culture; arts; sports; national science and technology competitions for middle and high school students.
2. Candidates receiving priority points.
The Department of Education and Training stipulates additional points for each type of candidate receiving priority policies, including:
a) Group 1 candidates:
- Children of martyrs;
- Children of invalids losing 81% or more of their working capacity;
- Children of sick soldiers losing 81% or more of their working capacity;
- Children of those who have been granted the “Certificate of People Entitled to Policies as Invalids,” where the recipient has a working capacity reduction of 81% or more;
- Children of those involved in resistance who were affected by chemical toxins;
- Children of revolutionaries active before January 1, 1945;
- Children of revolutionaries active from January 1, 1945 until the August 1945 uprising.
b) Group 2 candidates:
- Children of Heroes of the Armed Forces, Heroes of Labor, children of Vietnamese Heroic Mothers;
- Children of invalids losing less than 81% of their working capacity;
- Children of sick soldiers losing less than 81% of their working capacity;
- Children of those who have been granted the “Certificate of People Entitled to Policies as Invalids,” where the recipient has a working capacity reduction of less than 81%.
c) Group 3 candidates:
- People with a parent who is an ethnic minority;
- Ethnic minorities;
- People living and studying in areas with extremely difficult socio-economic conditions.
Therefore, according to the above regulations, the candidates directly admitted to high school include:
- Students from ethnic high schools;- Students from ethnic groups with very few people;- Disabled students;- Students who have won national and international awards in culture; arts; sports; national science and technology competitions for middle and high school students.
What are the methods of admission to grade 10?
According to Clause 2, Article 5 of the Regulations issued with Circular 11/2014/TT-BGDDT, it is stipulated as follows:
Candidates and Admission Methods
1. Candidates are those who have graduated middle school following the General Education Program or Continuing Education Program, and have an age compliant with Clause 2, Article 2 of these Regulations.
2. High school admissions are organized by one of the following three methods:
a) Selection: based on the overall performance and conduct of the 4 years in middle school of the candidates, if the student repeated a year, only the results of the repeated year will be considered;
b) Examination;
c) A combination of examination and selection.
Therefore, according to the above regulations, the methods of admissions to grade 10 include:
