Recently, the Department of Education and Training issued Official Dispatch 909/SGDDT-QLT in 2023, which provides the following guidelines for admission to preschools and Grade 1 for the academic year 2023-2024:
Regarding the Admission Period:
- Admission according to the catchment area for Grade 1 from July 1, 2023, to the end of July 3, 2023.
- Admission according to the catchment area for 5-year-old children to preschools from July 4, 2023, to the end of July 6, 2023.
- Direct admission from July 13, 2023, to the end of July 18, 2023.
- Non-public schools to start admission immediately after the end of the academic year, from May 26, 2023, to July 12, 2023.
Regarding Admission Documents:
For preschool admission:
+ Enrollment application form (as provided by the enrolling school) for direct admission, or an online system-generated form for online admission.
+ A valid Birth Certificate copy.
For Grade 1 admission:
+ Enrollment application form for Grade 1 (as provided by the enrolling school) for direct admission, or an online system-generated form for online admission.
+ A valid Birth Certificate copy.
+ Proof of preferential policies, encouragement granted by a competent authority (if any).

Guidelines for Admission to Grade 6 for the Academic Year 2023-2024 in Hanoi?
The Department of Education and Training issued Official Dispatch 909/SGDDT-QLT in 2023, which provides the following guidelines for admission to Grade 6 for the academic year 2023-2024:
Regarding the Admission Period:
- For secondary schools recognized as high-quality schools by the City People's Committee, if the number of applicants exceeds the quota, admission will be based on a combination of application review and competency assessment:
Schools should choose appropriate times for competency assessments, report to the Department of Education and Training, and get approval from the district-level town People’s Committee; complete the admission process no later than July 12, 2023.
- Admission according to the catchment area for Grade 6 from July 7, 2023, to the end of July 9, 2023.
- Direct admission from July 13, 2023, to the end of July 18, 2023.
- Non-public schools to start admission immediately after the end of the academic year, from May 26, 2023, to July 12, 2023.
Regarding the Admission Method:
- Applications will be reviewed according to the catchment areas as regulated by the district-level town People's Committee. The city will continue to use online admission support software.
- For secondary schools recognized as high-quality schools by the City People's Committee: if the number of applicants exceeds the quota, admission will follow either an application review or a combination of application review and competency assessment (hereafter referred to as competency assessment), based on the Admission Score (DTS) for student selection.
- Application Review Method:
Based on the academic performance and behavior of students in primary school and their priority status, secondary schools will develop a plan to determine students' Application Review Score. The Application Review Score will be on a 10-point scale.
+ Method of combining application review and competency assessment:
DTS = Application Review Score + Assessment Score (weight factor of 2)
++ Based on the academic performance and behavior of students in primary school and their priority status, secondary schools will develop a plan to determine students' Application Review Score. The Review Score will be on a 10-point scale;
++ Each competency assessment score will be on a 10-point scale; the assessment score is the total score of all competency assessments;
++ The assessment content is primarily from the Grade 5 curriculum;
++ Assessment format: multiple-choice or a combination of multiple-choice and written response, ensuring coverage of four cognitive levels: knowledge, comprehension, lower-level application, and higher-level application;
++ Duration: up to 60 minutes per assessment;
++ Subject and timing of the competency assessments: Schools propose reasonable subjects and times for competency assessments, report to the Department of Education and Training, and get approval from the district-level town People’s Committee.
Regarding Admission Documents:
- Application form for Grade 6 (as provided by the enrolling school) for direct admission, or an online system-generated form for online admission.
- Original primary school report card or other documents that can serve as a replacement.
- A valid Birth Certificate copy.
- Decision allowing grade skipping (if any).
- Proof of preferential policies, encouragement granted by a competent authority.

Regarding the Admission Period:
According to Plan 656/KH-SGDĐT in 2023, the schedule for admission to Grade 10 for the academic year 2023-2024 in Hanoi is as follows:
- The admission test schedule for Grade 10 for the academic year 2023-2024:
+ Morning of June 10, students will take the Literature exam (from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM);
+ Afternoon of June 10, students will take the Foreign Language exam (from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM).
+ Morning of June 11, students will take the Mathematics exam (from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM).
The specific admission test schedule for Grade 10 is according to Official Dispatch 922/SGDDT-QLT in 2023:
Regarding Application and Enrollment Documents:
According to the guidelines in Appendix II issued with Official Dispatch 922/SGDDT-QLT in 2023, the application and enrollment documents are as follows:
(1) Application documents:
- Application form for Grade 10 for the academic year 2023-2024 (Appendix XI, Form M01);
- Birth Certificate (copy with original for verification or certified copy);
- Lower secondary school graduation certificate (original or certified copy) or temporary lower secondary school graduation certificate (for students graduating in the academic year 2022-2023) issued by the lower secondary school, multi-grade secondary school, or vocational-educational center;
- Report card (original);
- Student's or parent's or guardian's ID card or Citizen ID card (copy with original for verification or certified copy);
- Proof of preferential policies granted by a competent authority, approval for grade skipping, early or late schooling as per general regulations of the lower level (if any);
- Proof of "not under criminal sentence; non-custodial reform or law violation" status issued by the local government (for free candidates who have graduated from lower secondary school).
(2) Enrollment documents:
- All application documents except the Application form for Grade 10 for the academic year 2023-2024, which the students will receive back along with the exam result notice on July 9, 2023, at the educational institution where they registered.
- Students will use these documents for enrollment at high schools, vocational-educational centers, and vocational education institutions if they meet admission requirements.
