What are the regulations on educational levels and entry ages in primary school education in Vietnam?

Pursuant to Clause 1, Article 28 of the Law on Education 2019 stipulates that the educational levels and entry ages of general education include:

- Primary education lasts for 05 school years, from the first to the fifth grade. The entry age for the first grade is 06;

- Lower secondary education lasts for 04 school years, from the sixth to the ninth grade. Students must complete the primary educational programme before entering the sixth grade. The entry age for the sixth grade is 11;

- Upper secondary education lasts for 03 school years, from the tenth to the twelfth grade. Students must complete the lower secondary educational programme before entering the tenth grade. The entry age for the tenth grade is 15;

*Primary general education program roadmap:

Pursuant to Article 2 of Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT stipulating the general education program roadmap is implemented as follows:

- first grade from academic year 2020-2021.

- second and sixth grade from academic year 2021-2022

- third and seventh grade from academic year 2022-2023

- fourth, eighth and eleventh grade from academic year 2023-2024.

- fifth, ninth and twelfth grade from academic year 2024-2025.

Thus, the new general education program in English will be implemented according to the above schedule.

How many subjects must primary school students study in the school year 2023-2024 under the general education curriculum in Vietnam?

- Implementing Resolution 29-NQ/TW in 2013 and Resolution 88/2014/QH13, the new general education program is divided into two phases: basic education stage (from 1st grade to 9th grade) and career-oriented education stage (from 10th to 12th grade).

+ Accordingly, the system of subjects and educational activities of the general education program includes compulsory educational subjects and activities, career-oriented elective subjects (referred to as electives) and electives.

+ The actual study time in a school year is equivalent to 35 weeks. Educational institutions can organize 1 lesson/day or 2 lessons/day. Educational institutions that organize teaching 1 lesson/day and 2 lessons/day must implement compulsory education contents that are uniformly applicable to all educational institutions in the country.

- Specifically, according to Section IV of the General Education Program promulgated together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT on the overall program of subjects The primary education curriculum must be studied, including:

*Educational content at the Primary level includes 11 compulsory education subjects and activities and 2 elective subjects

- Compulsory subjects: Vietnamese; Maths; Morality; Foreign language 1 (in grade 3, grade 4, grade 5); Nature and Society (in grade 1, grade 2, grade 3); History and Geography (in grades 4, 5); Science (in grades 4, 5); Informatics and Technology (in grade 3, grade 4, grade 5); Physical education; Arts (music, arts); experience activities)

- 2 elective subjects (Ethnic minority languages, Foreign language 1 (in grade 1, grade 2)).

- The duration of education is 2 sessions/day, no more than 7 classes are arranged each day; 35 minutes each lesson (with instructions for schools that are not yet qualified to organize 2 teaching sessions/day).

Thus, primary school students will study the above subjects, including those that require certain classes to learn. For example, history is taught in grades 3 to 5, not history in grades 1 and 2.

In the school year 2023-2024: How many 1st-grade English textbooks are used in general education institutions in Vietnam?

From January 20, 2020 when the Ministry of Education and Training issued Decision 180/QD-BGDDT in 2020 approving the List of English textbooks for 1st-grade used in general education institutions.
