What are the current regulations on the expiry date of the citizen ID cards in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Article 21 of the Law on Citizen identification 2014 as follows:
Age eligible for renewal of citizen identity cards
1. A citizen identity card must be renewed when a citizen reaches full 25 years, full 40 years and full 60 years.
2. Citizen identity cards which are granted, renewed or re-granted within 2 years before a citizen reaches the age specified in Clause 1 of this Article remain to be valid until he/she reaches the subsequent age eligible for card renewal.
According to the above provisions, a citizen identity card must be renewed when a citizen reaches full 25 years, full 40 years and full 60 years
Accordingly, the duration of use of the chip-based citizen ID card is determined as the remaining time from the time the citizen completes the procedures for the issuance of the chip-based citizen ID card to the time when he/she is old enough to change the chip-based citizen ID card according to regulations.
Citizen identity cards which are granted, renewed or re-granted within 2 years before a citizen reaches full 25 years, full 40 years and full 60 years remain to be valid until he/she reaches the subsequent age eligible for card renewal.
Example: Friend A was born in 2001, as a citizen in 2021 (when he was 20 years old). Therefore, the validity period of citizen ID card until the next renewal is 05 years (until the year A is 25 years old).
Thus, the expiry date of the citizen ID card is determined to be in 2026 (specifically, your date of birth A in 2026). If friend A was born on August 12, 2021, the expiry date is August 12, 2026.
Note: for citizen ID cards issued, exchanged or re-issued within 2 years before reaching the age to change citizen ID cards, they will still be valid until the next age.

2. Contents
a) The front of the citizen ID card includes the following information:
- Left, top to bottom: National emblem of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, 12 mm in diameter; photo of the person issued with a citizen ID card, size 20 x 30 mm; Valid until/Date of expiry;
- Right, from top to bottom: SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM; Independence - Freedom - Happiness; SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF VIET NAM; Independence - Freedom - Happiness; the words D N/Citizen Identity Card; chip icon; QR code; No./No; Full name/Full name; Date of birth/Date of birth; Gender/Sex; Nationality/Nationality; Place of origin/Place of origin; Place of residence/Place of residence;
b) The back of the citizen identification card includes the following information:
- Left, top to bottom: Identity/Personal identification; Day, month, year/Date, month, year; DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR ADMINISTRATIVE MANAGEMENT OF SOCIAL ORDER; signature, full name and full name of the person authorized to issue the card; stamp bearing the national emblem of the agency issuing the citizen's identity card; electronic chips.
- Right, from top to bottom: There are 2 boxes: Left index finger fingerprint/Left index finger and Right index finger fingerprint/Right index finger of the person who is issued with a citizen identification card.

Where to check the expiry date of the citizen ID cards in Vietnam?
(1) In the case of a chip-based citizen ID card Pursuant to Article 3 of Circular 06/2021/TT-BCA:
- The citizen ID card issue date is on the back of the card, on the left side, second from the top.
- Above the date of issue of the citizen ID card is the entry of personal identification: This is a unique and externally stable characteristic to distinguish one person from another.
- Below the date of issue of the citizen ID card is an electronic chip, seal and signature of the Director of the Administration for Social Order Administration.
- To the right of the date of issuance of the citizen ID card with the chip is the fingerprint box of the left index finger/Left index finger and right index finger/Right index finger of the CCCD card holder.
- At the bottom is a line of characters called MRZ
(2) In case of barcode of citizen ID card
- Barcode of citizen ID card with the date of issue on the back of the card, the bottom right corner, next to the fingerprint box, under the identification and barcode line.
How to determine the validity of citizen ID cards in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Article 20 of the Law on Citizen identification 2014 as follows:
Use validity of citizen identity cards
1. Citizen identity card is a personal paper of a Vietnamese citizen which proves citizen identification of the card holder for conducting transactions in the Vietnamese territory.
2. Citizen identity cards shall be used instead of passports in case Vietnam and a foreign country have signed a treaty or international agreement permitting citizens of the signatories to use citizen identity cards instead of passports in each other’s territory
3. Competent agencies, organizations and individuals may request a citizen to produce his/her citizen identity cards for checking identification and information specified in Article 18 of this Law; use personal identification numbers in citizen identity cards for checking information about the card holders in the national population database and specialized databases in accordance with law.
When a citizen produces his/her citizen identity card at the request of a competent agency, organization or individual, this agency, organization or individual may not request the citizen to produce another paper to prove the information specified in Clauses 1 and 3 of this Article.
4. The State shall protect legitimate rights and interests of holders of citizen identity cards in accordance with law.
Thus, the use value of the citizen identification card is determined according to the above provisions. This is the identity document of a Vietnamese citizen.
