Military ranks of officers
According to Article 10 of the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army 1999, officer ranks consist of 3 categories, 12 grades:
- General ranks have four grades:
+ General;
+ Senior Lieutenant General, Admiral of the Navy;
+ Lieutenant General, Vice Admiral of the Navy;
+ Major General, Rear Admiral of the Navy;
- Colonel ranks have four grades:
+ Colonel;
+ Senior Colonel;
+ Lieutenant Colonel;
+ Major;
- Lieutenant ranks have four grades:
+ Captain;
+ Senior Lieutenant;
+ First Lieutenant;
+ Second Lieutenant.
Military ranks of professional soldiers
According to Article 16 of the Law on Professional Soldiers, Defense Workers, and Public Defense Employees 2015, the military ranks of professional soldiers are regulated as follows:
- The military ranks of professional soldiers correspond to technical, professional skills, and salary levels, including:
+ Senior Colonel professional soldier;
+ Lieutenant Colonel professional soldier;
+ Major professional soldier;
+ Captain professional soldier;
+ Senior Lieutenant professional soldier;
+ First Lieutenant professional soldier;
+ Second Lieutenant professional soldier.
- The highest rank of professional soldiers includes:
+ Senior level: Senior Colonel professional soldier;
+ Intermediate level: Lieutenant Colonel professional soldier;
+ Basic level: Major professional soldier.
Military ranks of non-commissioned officers and soldiers
According to Article 8 of the Law on Military Service, military ranks of non-commissioned officers and soldiers:
- Non-commissioned officers of the Vietnam People's Army have three ranks:
+ Sergeant Major;
+ Sergeant;
+ Corporal.
- Soldiers of the Vietnam People's Army have two ranks:
+ Private First Class;
+ Private.

When can officers of the Vietnam People's Army be promoted in rank?
According to the provisions at Article 17 of the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army 1999 (amended by Clause 4 Article 1 of the Amended Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army 2014) regarding the rank promotion for active officers:
- Active officers are promoted in rank when they meet the following conditions:
+ Meet the standards as prescribed in Article 12 of the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army 1999;
+ Current rank is lower than the highest rank prescribed for the position being held;
+ Have enough time period for rank promotion as regulated.
The time frame for rank promotion for active officers is regulated as follows:

Lieutenant General, Vice Admiral of the Navy to Senior Lieutenant General, Admiral of the Navy minimum of 4 years;
Senior Lieutenant General, Admiral of the Navy to General minimum of 4 years;
Time spent studying at school counts towards the time frame for rank promotion.
Additionally, the age for officers being considered for rank promotion from Colonel to Major General, Rear Admiral of the Navy is no more than 57, higher if required as decided by the President.
Officers with exceptional achievements may be considered for an extraordinary rank promotion but not exceeding the highest military rank prescribed for the position.
What is the time frame for rank promotion for officers of the People's Public Security?
According to Clause 3 Article 22 of the Law on People's Public Security 2018, the time frame for rank promotion is regulated as follows:
- Non-commissioned officers and professional officers:
+ Corporal to Sergeant: 1 year;
+ Sergeant to Sergeant Major: 1 year;
+ Sergeant Major to Second Lieutenant: 2 years;
+ Second Lieutenant to First Lieutenant: 2 years;
+ First Lieutenant to Senior Lieutenant: 3 years;
+ Senior Lieutenant to Captain: 3 years;
+ Captain to Major: 4 years;
+ Major to Lieutenant Colonel: 4 years;
+ Lieutenant Colonel to Senior Colonel: 4 years;
+ Senior Colonel to Colonel: 4 years;
+ Colonel to Major General: 4 years;
The time frame for each grade within general ranks is a minimum of 4 years;
- The Minister of Public Security shall prescribe the time frame for salary increase and rank promotion for technical specialty non-commissioned officers and officers corresponding to the salary levels in the technical specialty salary scale prescribed by the Government of Vietnam;
- The Minister of Public Security shall prescribe the time frame for rank promotion for non-commissioned officers and conscripted soldiers;
- Time spent studying at school counts towards the time frame for rank promotion; for non-commissioned officers and soldiers demoted, after 1 year from the date of demotion, if progressed, they are considered for rank promotion.
According to Clause 4 Article 22 of the Law on People's Public Security 2018, the age limit for officers to be considered for rank promotion from Colonel to Major General is no more than 57; higher if required as decided by the President.
