- Anti-imperialist Workers' Union (1939 - 1941), with the task of fighting to protect the daily interests of workers, carrying out the revolution to overthrow colonial and feudal regimes, liberating the class and the nation, leading strikes.
- National Salvation Workers' Union (1941 - 1946), under the leadership of the Communist Party, with appropriate organizing forms and clear fighting goals, the national salvation workers' movement developed strongly in the North, Central regions, especially in Hanoi, Hai Phong, Hon Gai... In August 1945, the working class under the leadership of the Communist Party, together with the entire nation, overthrew the Japanese fascists and feudal government, gained national independence, establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
- Vietnam General Confederation of Labor (1946 - 1961), in response to the new requirements and tasks of the revolution, on June 20, 1946, the National Conference of National Salvation Trade Union Officials decided to rename the “National Salvation Workers' Union” to “Trade Union” and established the “Vietnam General Confederation of Labor,” mobilizing workers to participate in combat, encouraging workers to build production facilities, serving a prolonged resistance, building the socialist North.

Held from October 17 - 20, 1988, in the capital Hanoi. The goal of the Congress was “Implementing the renovation policy of the Communist Party for employment, living standards, democracy, and social justice.” The Congress decided to rename the General Confederation of Labor of Vietnam to the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor. The Congress elected the Executive Committee of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor consisting of 155 members, the Secretariat consisting of 15 members. Comrade Nguyen Van Tu, Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party, was elected President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor; Comrade Cu Thi Hau, Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party, was elected Vice President; Comrade Duong Xuan An was elected Vice President.

The 2023 Congress of the Vietnam Trade Union will be held from December 1 - 3, 2023, at the My Dinh National Convention Center, capital Hanoi.
The Congress will have several main contents as follows:
- Discuss and approve the report of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, term XII (2018 - 2023), to be submitted to the 13th Congress of the Vietnam Trade Union;
- Determine the targets, directions, tasks, and solutions for the 2023 - 2028 term;
- Approve the amended and supplemented Charter of the Vietnam Trade Union;
- Elect the Executive Committee of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, term XIII;
- Aggregate the recommendations of the trade union members and workers nationwide to the Communist Party and the State on issues related to the legitimate rights and interests of trade union members and workers.
- The Congress will vote to approve the Resolution of the Congress and conclude the Congress.
