Pursuant to the provisions of Clause 1, Article 1 of Circular 13/2022/TT-BGDDT, stipulating the adjustment of History from elective subject in the Social Science disciplines to compulsory subject as follows:

“Article 1. Amending and supplementing some contents of the Overall Program in the General Education Program promulgated together with the Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDĐT dated December 26, 2018 of the Minister of Education and Training
1. To amend and supplement section "2. Stage of career orientation" section "IV. EDUCATION PLAN" as follows:
"2. Career Orientation Stage
2.1. Educational content
Compulsory subjects and educational activities: Literature, Mathematics, Foreign Language 1; History; Physical education; National defense and security education; Experiential activities, career guidance; Local educational content.
Elective subjects: Geography, Economic and legal education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology, Informatics, music, Fine arts.
Students choose 4 subjects from electives.
Study topics: Each subject of Literature, Mathematics, History, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology, Informatics, Music, Fine Arts has a cluster of learning topics to fulfill the requirements of deep differentiation, enhance knowledge and practical skills, apply learned knowledge and skills to solve problems, meet the requirements of career orientation for students. The duration for each study topic is 10 or 15 periods; The total time spent in a specialized cluster for studying is 35 periods/subject/school year. In each grade 10, 11, 12, students choose 3 clusters of learning topics of 3 subjects in accordance with their own aspirations and the organizational capacity of the school.
Schools can build subject clusters from the above subjects and learning topics to both meet the needs of learners and ensure that they are suitable for the conditions of teachers and teaching equipment of the school.
Elective subjects: Ethnic minority language, Foreign language 2.

Accordingly, history has changed from elective subject to compulsory subject, leading to current compulsory subjects including: Literature, Mathematics, Foreign Language 1; History; Physical education; National defense and security education; Experiential activities, career guidance; Local educational content.

What are the specific regulations on the length of education for the upper secondary school in Vietnam?

Pursuant to the provisions of Clause 1, Article 1 of Circular 13/2022/TT-BGDDT, specifying the length of education for the upper secondary school as follows:

“2.2. Education duration

1 session per day, no more than 5 lessons per session; 45 minutes each lesson. Encourage qualified high schools to teach 2 sessions/day under the guidance of the Ministry of Education and Training.

What are the changes of career-oriented education in Vietnam?

Pursuant to the provisions of Clause 2, Article 1 of Circular 13/2022/TT-BGDDT amending and supplementing the career-oriented education as follows:

"2. Amendment and addition of the second bullet "- “Career-oriented education", section "3. Social science education" part "V. ORIENTATION ON EDUCATIONAL CONTENT" as follows:
“- Career-oriented education
In grade 10, the History and Geography helps students understand the general characteristics of historical science and geographical science, professions related to history and geography, and the ability to apply knowledge historical and geographical knowledge in daily life, while consolidating and expanding the core knowledge and skills base formed at the basic education stage through learning topics and topics about basic issues of history and geography, creating a solid basis for students to have a clear and appropriate career orientation.
In grades 11 and 12, History focuses on learning topics in various fields of history, such as political history, economic history, civilization history, cultural history, military history and social history, interaction and integration of Vietnam into the region and the world,...; Geography focuses on a number of learning topics and topics on world geography (typical regions, countries) and Vietnamese geography (natural, socio-economic) to support students with career orientation in the fields of social sciences and humanities as well as a number of related sciences”.

Thus, Circular 13/2022/TT-BGDDT has transferred history from an elective subject to a compulsory subject, and specifically stipulates that the length of education must ensure one session per day, no more than 5 lessons per session; 45 minutes each lesson.

Circular 13/2022/TT-BGDDT takes effect from August 3, 2022.
