What are the functions and tasks of the Vietnam Geological Department in state management?
As stipulated in Article 1 of Decision 2958/QD-BTNMT of 2022 regarding the functions of the Vietnam Geological Department as follows:
- The Vietnam Geological Department is an organization under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, functioning as an advisor to assist the Minister in performing state management tasks in the field of geology, basic geological surveys, and minerals across the country; and organizing the implementation of public services in the geological field in accordance with the law.
- The Vietnam Geological Department has legal status, its own seal, and account in accordance with the law, with its headquarters in Hanoi.

Article 2 of Decision 2958/QD-BTNMT of 2022 stipulates the tasks and authority of the Vietnam Geological Department as follows:
- Submitting to the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment:
+ Draft laws, draft resolutions of the National Assembly; draft ordinances, draft resolutions of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly; draft decrees, resolutions of the Government of Vietnam; draft decisions, directives of the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam; mechanisms, policies, and other documents related to geology;
+ Strategies, plans, programs, projects, initiatives on geology; planning for basic geological surveys, geological resource surveys, geological hazards, geological heritage, geological parks;
+ National standards, national technical regulations, technical regulations, technical-economic norms within the scope of state management of the Department;
+ Delineating and announcing areas with scattered, small-scale minerals; hazardous, radioactive minerals; geological heritage, geological parks; national mineral reserve areas.
- Organizing the implementation and adjustment of basic geological surveys and minerals planning.
- Appraising plans, projects, tasks concerning: geology, minerals, engineering geology - hydrogeology, geological hazards, geological heritage, geological parks; monitoring geological hazards according to the law.
- Organizing the implementation of plans, projects, tasks of basic geological surveys, minerals, engineering geology - hydrogeology, geological hazards, geological heritage, geological parks; monitoring geological hazards as per the law and Minister's assignment.
- Conducting exploratory activities for strategic and important minerals for socio-economic development, defense, and security purposes as commissioned by the State.
- Determining reimbursement costs for the use of geological data, quantifying and accounting the value of geological resources and minerals according to the law.
- Implementing the registration of activities in basic geological surveys, engineering geology - hydrogeology, geological hazards, geological heritage, geological parks; monitoring geological hazards; aggregating the results of basic geological surveys.
- Regarding international cooperation:
+ Participating in the negotiation of international treaties and agreements on geology; organizing the implementation of international treaties and agreements on geology and geological resources as assigned or authorized by the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment;
+ Developing and implementing plans, programs, initiatives, projects of international cooperation, forums, conferences, and international seminars on geology upon approval by competent authorities;
+ Assisting the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment as the national focal point participating in the Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programs in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP), the Vietnam National Committee for the International Geoscience Program (IGCP). Acting as the national focal point supporting the coordination and implementation of activities related to the development and management of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
- Organizing the implementation of administrative reforms, practicing thrift, preventing wastage, and performing the tasks of anti-corruption and negativity within the Department's management scope according to the Ministry's program and plan assigned by the Minister.
- Managing finance, accounting, and assets of the Department; fulfilling the responsibilities of a level II budgeting unit for subdivisions of the Department in accordance with the law.
- Managing organization, staffing, job positions; officials and public employees, and employees of the Department as stipulated by law and as assigned by the Minister.

How many leaders does the Vietnam Geological Department have?
Based on Article 3 of Decision 2958/QD-BTNMT of 2022, the number and responsibilities of the Vietnam Geological Department's leadership are stipulated as follows:
- The Vietnam Geological Department has one Director and no more than 03 Deputy Directors.
- The Director is responsible to the Minister and the law for all activities of the Department; issuing working regulations of the Department; signing professional documentation according to the assigned functions, tasks, and other documents based on the Minister's assignment or authorization.
- The Deputy Directors assist the Director and are responsible to the Director and the law for the assigned field of work.
Decision 2958/QD-BTNMT of 2022 is effective from January 01, 2023.
