In the General education program issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the subjects in the natural and social sciences are specified as follows:
Compulsory subjects and educational activities: Vietnamese Language; Mathematics; Foreign Language 1; Physical Education; National Defense and Security Education; Experiential Activities, Career Orientation; Local Educational Content.
Optional subjects consist of 3 groups of subjects:
Group of Social Sciences: History, Geography, Economics and Law Education.
Group of Natural Sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Biology.
Group of Technology and Arts: Technology, Computer Science, Arts (Music, Fine Arts).
Students choose 5 subjects from the above 3 groups of subjects, with at least 1 subject chosen from each group.
Study topics: Each subject, including Vietnamese Language, Mathematics, History, Geography, Economics and Law Education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology, Computer Science, Arts, has a number of study topics that form a cluster of study topics for the subject. These study topics aim to fulfill the requirements of deep differentiation, helping students enhance their knowledge and practical skills, apply the learned knowledge and skills to solve practical problems, and meet career orientation requirements. The duration for each study topic is 10 or 15 periods; the total duration for a cluster of study topics for a subject is 35 periods per academic year. In each grade 10, 11, 12, students choose 3 clusters of study topics from 3 subjects that are suitable for their own aspirations and the organization capacity of the school.
Schools can construct combinations of subjects from the 3 groups of subjects and study topics mentioned above to meet the needs of learners and ensure compatibility with the conditions of the teaching staff, facilities, and teaching equipment of the school.
Elective subjects: Ethnic Minority Language, Foreign Language 2.
Therefore, the social sciences group includes: History, Geography, Economics and Law Education.

History:
History is a subject in the social sciences group, chosen according to career orientation in general high school education.
The mission of History is to help students develop historical competence, a component of scientific competence, and contribute to the formation and development of key qualities and general competencies as defined in the overall program. History plays a leading role in educating love for the country, national self-esteem, historical traditions and national culture, helping students understand and apply historical lessons to solve practical problems, develop vision, reinforce human values, community spirit, tolerance, and compassion. It also contributes to the formation and development of the qualities of Vietnamese citizens and global citizens in the context of development.
History develops and enhances students' historical thinking, systematic thinking, critical thinking, skills in exploiting and using historical sources, understanding and presenting history in a logical and contemporary manner, connecting the past with the present.
History helps students appreciate the scientific and practical value of history in modern society, gain knowledge and love for history, national culture, and humanity. It also helps guide students in choosing careers such as social and humanities research, diplomacy, management, tourism, cultural industries, and media.
The History program systematizes and consolidates historical knowledge in the basic education stage, and helps students delve deeper into core historical knowledge through study topics and specialized topics on world history, Southeast Asian history, and Vietnamese history. Geography:
Geography education is implemented at all levels of general education. In primary and lower secondary education, geography education is integrated into the subject of History and Geography. In general high school education, Geography is a subject in the social sciences group, chosen according to the students' desires and career orientation.
Geography belongs to both the social sciences field (economic and social geography) and the natural sciences field (physical geography). It helps students gain basic knowledge of geography, related professions, and the ability to apply geographical knowledge in life. It also reinforces and expands the core general knowledge and skills formed in the basic education stage, providing a solid foundation for students to continue studying related fields.
Economics and Law Education:
Economics and Law Education is a subject chosen according to the students' desires and career orientation. The main content of the subject is general knowledge and basic economics and law suitable for the students' age. It has practical applications for students' lives and career orientation after general high school education. It is integrated with moral education and life skills, helping students have a correct understanding and fulfill their rights, obligations, and citizenship responsibilities.
In each grade 10, 11, 12, students who have a career orientation in Political Education, Citizenship Education, Economics, Administration, Law, or have an interest in the subject can choose to study some specialized topics. These specialized topics aim to enhance knowledge of economics, law, and the application of knowledge in practice, meeting the interests, needs, and career orientation of students.

History and Geography are elective subjects in grades 10, 11, and 12.
In grade 10, the subject of History helps students grasp the general characteristics of the science of history and geography, related professions in history and geography, the ability to apply historical and geographical knowledge in life, while consolidating and expanding the core foundational knowledge and skills formed in the basic education stage through study topics and specialized topics on basic historical and geographical issues, creating a solid foundation for students to have clear and suitable career orientation.
In grades 11 and 12, the subject of History focuses on study topics and specialized topics in various fields of history, such as political history, economic history, civilization history, cultural history, military history, and social history, the interaction and integration of Vietnam into the region and the world, etc. The subject of Geography focuses on certain study topics and specialized topics on world geography (representative regions and countries) and Vietnamese geography (natural geography, economic-social geography) to support students who have career orientation in the field of social sciences and humanities as well as related scientific disciplines.
