What are the subjects in the natural and social sciences in Vietnam?

Pursuant to the General Education Program issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the subjects in the natural and social sciences are specified as follows:

Compulsory subjects and educational activities: Literature; Mathematics; Foreign Language 1; Physical Education; National Defense and Security Education; Experiential Activities, Career Orientation; Local education content.
Elective subjects include 3 groups of subjects:
- Group of social science subjects: History, Geography, Economic and Legal Education.
- Group of natural science subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology.
- Group of technology and art subjects: Technology, Computer Science, Arts (Music, Fine Arts).
Students choose 5 subjects from the 3 groups of subjects above, with at least 1 subject from each group.
Specialized study topics: Each subject, Literature, Mathematics, History, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology, Computer Science, Arts, has a number of specialized study topics forming a cluster of specialized study topics for the subject. This aims to implement deep differentiation requirements, help students enhance knowledge and practical skills, apply learned knowledge and skills to solve practical problems, and meet career orientation requirements. The duration for each specialized study topic is 10 periods or 15 periods; the total duration for the cluster of specialized study topics of a subject is 35 periods per academic year. In each grade 10, 11, 12, students choose 3 clusters of specialized study topics from 3 subjects that are suitable for their own aspirations and the school's organizational capacity.
Schools can construct combinations of subjects from the 3 groups of subjects and the mentioned specialized study topics to meet the needs of learners while ensuring suitability with the conditions of the teaching staff, facilities, and teaching equipment of the school.
Optional subjects: Ethnic Minority Language, Foreign Language 2.

Therefore, the natural science and social science groups include the following subjects:

- Natural Science Group: Physics, Chemistry, Biology.

- Social Science Group: History, Geography, Economic and Legal Education.

In addition to these subjects, each group also includes compulsory subjects such as Literature; Mathematics; Foreign Language 1; Physical Education; National Defense and Security Education; Experiential Activities, Career Orientation; Local education content.

Natural science education is implemented through the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in grades 10, 11, and 12. These are subjects belonging to the group of natural science subjects that students choose based on their career orientation, interests, and abilities. The curriculum for each subject helps students continue to develop their natural science capabilities from specific perspectives (physics, chemistry, biology); ensuring the development of knowledge and skills based on the foundation of general abilities and natural science capabilities formed in the basic education phase, while meeting the career orientation requirements for specific professions.

What is the orientation of social science education content in the career orientation phase in Vietnam?

In the Comprehensive Program issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the orientation of social science education content in the career orientation phase is specified as follows:

History and Geography are elective subjects in grades 10, 11, and 12.

In grade 10, the subject of History helps students grasp the general characteristics of historical and geographical sciences, related professions in history and geography, the ability to apply historical and geographical knowledge in daily life, while reinforcing and expanding the foundation of core knowledge and skills formed in the basic education phase through study topics and specialized study topics on basic issues of history and geography, creating a solid foundation for students to have a clear and suitable career orientation.

In grades 11 and 12, the subject of History focuses on study topics and specialized study topics in areas of historiography, such as political history, economic history, civilization history, cultural history, military history, and social history, as well as Vietnam's interactions and integration into the region and the world. The subject of Geography focuses on some study topics and specialized study topics on world geography (regions, representative countries) and Vietnamese geography (natural, economic, and social) to support students with career orientations in the field of social sciences and humanities, as well as some related scientific fields.

Note: The general education program according to Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT is implemented according to the following timeline:

- Starting from the 2020-2021 academic year for grade 1.

- Starting from the 2021-2022 academic year for grade 2 and grade 6.

- Starting from the 2022-2023 academic year for grade 3, grade 7, and grade 10.

- Starting from the 2023-2024 academic year for grade 4, grade 8, and grade 11.

- Starting from the 2024-2025 academic year for grade 5, grade 9, and grade 12.
