How long does it take to complete a second Bachelor's Degree in Vietnam?

Currently, there are no specific regulations regarding the duration of a second Bachelor's Degree as it depends on the form of study (formal or part-time) and the duration of the program for each field.

For example:

- In the case of regular study: 3-4 years

- Some specific fields like medicine, dentistry: It can take up to 5 years (not including the internship period of 1-3 years).

Moreover, according to Clause 1, Article 36 Law on Higher Education 2012 (amended by Clause 21, Article 1 Amended Law on Higher Education 2018 and replaced certain phrases by Clause 1, Article 2 Amended Law on Higher Education 2018):

University education program and curriculum

1. Training program:

a) The training program includes objectives, the volume of knowledge, structure, content, methods, and forms of assessment for the subject, field of study, training level, and output standards in line with the Vietnam National Qualifications Framework;

b) The training program is developed based on credit units, including research-oriented, application-oriented, and career-oriented programs, ensuring the linkage between levels and fields of study, ensuring the training program standards;

c) Universities use training programs of foreign educational institutions that are authorized by competent agencies to train and award degrees or have valid quality accreditation certificates issued by legal quality accreditation organizations, ensuring compliance with intellectual property laws;

d) Universities are autonomous and accountable in developing, appraising, and issuing training programs for college, undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels;

dd) Universities with foreign investment are autonomous and accountable in developing training programs and implementing accredited training programs by educational quality accreditation organizations of Vietnam, ensuring no harm to national defense, security, community interests, no content distorting history, adversely affecting culture, ethics, and traditional customs and practices, and unity among Vietnamese ethnic groups, peace, and world security; not promoting religion;

e) Training programs in the form of continuing education have content similar to training programs in the form of formal education.

In addition, Article 35 Law on Higher Education 2012 (amended by Clause 20, Article 1 Amended Law on Higher Education 2018) stipulates the training duration as follows:

Training duration

1. The training duration is determined based on the number of credits required to complete each program and training level. The number of credits required for each level is specified in the Vietnam National Qualifications Framework. The university rector decides the number of credits required for each program and training level in accordance with legal regulations.

2. The Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam approves the National Education System Structure and the Vietnam National Qualifications Framework; stipulates the standardized training duration for higher education levels within the National Education System Structure.

From this, it can be seen that the time to complete a second Bachelor's Degree is essentially like repeating a university program, so it averages around 3-4 years.

Does the second Bachelor's Degree in Vietnam have the same value as the first one?

Based on Article 12 Law on Higher Education 2019:

Diplomas and certificates

1. The diplomas of the national education system are awarded to learners after graduating from a level of education or after completing an educational program, meeting the output standards for the corresponding level as stipulated by this Law.

2. The diplomas of the national education system include secondary school graduation diplomas, high school graduation diplomas, intermediate graduation diplomas, college graduation diplomas, bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, doctoral degrees, and equivalent degrees.

3. Certificates of the national education system are awarded to learners to confirm learning outcomes after training, fostering to improve educational knowledge, professional skills, or awarded to learners who take exams to obtain certificates as stipulated.

4. Diplomas and certificates issued by educational institutions under different types and forms of training within the national education system have equivalent legal value.

5. The Government of Vietnam issues the system of higher education diplomas and stipulates equivalent degrees for some specialized intensive training fields.

The law clearly stipulates that diplomas and certificates issued by educational institutions under different types and forms of training within the national education system have equivalent legal value.

Thus, university degrees are not distinguished by level, whether you study for a second Bachelor's Degree or through other forms of training at a university, they still have the same legal value.
