What are requirements fpr grade 10 students regarding the Chapter of Chemical Bond of the grade 10 Chemistry in Vietnam?
At Subsection 2, Section 5 of the General Education Program in Chemistry issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, grade 10 students must meet the following requirements in the Chapter of Chemical Bond of Chemistry:
Octet Rule | - Demonstrate and apply the octet rule in the process of forming chemical bonds for Group A elements. |
Ionic Bond | - Describe the concept and formation of an ionic bond (providing several typical examples following the octet rule). - State the structure of the NaCl crystal. Explain why ionic compounds are often in a solid state under normal conditions (in ionic crystal form). |
Covalent Bond | - Describe the concept and provide examples of covalent bonding (single, double, triple bonds) when applying the octet rule. - Write the Lewis structures of some simple compounds. - Explain the concept of coordination bonding. - Differentiate between types of bonds (non-polar covalent bond, polar covalent bond, ionic bond) based on electronegativity. - Explain the formation of sigma and pi bonds through orbital overlap. - Present the concept of bond energy (covalent bonds). - Assemble molecular models, NaCl crystal (according to available models). |
Hydrogen Bond and Van der Waals Interactions | - Explain the concept of the hydrogen bond. Apply it to explain the occurrence of the hydrogen bond (with highly electronegative elements: N, O, F). - State the role and effects of the hydrogen bond on the physical properties of H2O. - Explain the concept of Van der Waals interactions and their influence on the melting point and boiling point of substances. |
Regarding study topics:
Chemical Bonds | - Write Lewis structures, use the VSEPR model to predict the geometry of some simple molecules. - Present the concept of AO hybridization (sp, sp2, sp3), apply it to explain bonds in some molecules (CO2; BF3; CH4;...). |

What is the duration of the Chapter of Chemical Bond for grade 10 students in Vietnam?
Based on Clause 2, Section 8 of the General Education Program in Chemistry issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT:
The duration for each class is 105 periods per school year, taught over 35 weeks. Of that, the time allocated for core content is 70 periods. The expected percentage time allocation for each content strand is as follows:
Topic | Percentage |
Structure of atoms | 18% |
Periodic table of chemical elements | 13% |
Chemical bonds | 17% |
Oxidation-reduction reactions | 5% |
Chemical energy | 14% |
Reaction rate | 9% |
Group VIIA elements | 14% |
Periodic assessments | 10% |
... |
The duration for the Chapter of Chemical Bond is 17%.
