Literary Texts

Understanding Content

- Able to provide overall comments on the content of the text; able to analyze pivotal details, themes, stories, characters, and their relationships within the entirety of the work.

- Able to analyze and evaluate the themes, ideas, and messages the text conveys to the reader through its artistic form; able to identify some bases for determining the theme.

- Able to analyze and evaluate the emotions, feelings, and main inspirations expressed by the writer through the text. Detecting ethical and cultural values from the text.

Understanding Form

- Recognize and analyze some elements of epics and myths such as: space, time, plot, characters, narrator’s voice, character’s voice, etc.

- Recognize and analyze some elements of stories such as: characters, plot, third-person narrator (omniscient narrator), first-person narrator (limited narrator), viewpoints, narrator’s voice, character’s voice, etc.

- Analyze and evaluate the aesthetic value of some elements in poetry such as words, images, rhyme, rhythm, antithesis, lyrical subject, lyrical character.

- Recognize and analyze some elements of traditional theater forms like chèo and tuồng such as: themes, anonymity, plot, characters, dialogues, methods of transmission, etc.

Relate, Compare, Connect

- Apply knowledge about author Nguyen Trai to comprehend some of his works.

- Recognize and analyze the historical and cultural context presented in literary texts.

- Relate to find some similarities in content between literary works from different cultures.

- Mention the significance or impact of the literary work on the reader's opinions, views, thoughts, and emotions; express personal feelings and evaluations of the work.

Extensive Reading

- During one academic year, read at least 35 literary texts (including texts guided for reading on the Internet) that have similar genres and lengths to the texts learned.

- Memorize some favorite poetry excerpts or poems from the program.

Argumentative Texts

Understanding Content

- Recognize and analyze the content of the argument, main points, reasons, and key evidence in the text.

- Determine the meaning of the text. Analyze the relationship between arguments, reasons, and evidence; the role of arguments, reasons, and evidence in expressing the text's main content.

- Based on the arguments, reasons, and evidence in the text to recognize the purpose and viewpoint of the author.

Understanding Form

- Identify and analyze the author’s arrangement and presentation of arguments, reasons, and evidence.

- Identify and analyze the role of expressive elements in argumentative texts.

Relate, Compare, Connect

- Recognize and analyze the historical or cultural, social contexts; mention the significance or impact of the text on one’s life views.

Extensive Reading

- During one academic year, read at least 9 argumentative texts (including texts guided for reading on the Internet) that are of similar length to the texts learned.

Informative Texts

Understanding Content

- Able to infer and analyze the connection between details and their roles in expressing the main content of the text.

- Analyze and evaluate the theme, basic information of the text, and the author’s choice of title; recognize the author's purpose.

Understanding Form

- Recognize some types of composite informative texts: explanatory texts that incorporate one or more elements such as description, narration, expression, argument; explain the purpose of incorporating these elements into the text.

- Identify and analyze the combination of linguistic and non-linguistic communication methods to convey the text content vividly and effectively.

- Analyze and evaluate the reporting method and viewpoint of the author in a news report.

Relate, Compare, Connect

- Mention the significance or impact of the read informative text on oneself.

Extensive Reading

- During one academic year, read at least 18 informative texts (including texts guided for reading on the Internet) that have similar types and lengths to the texts learned.
WRITING

Writing Process

- Write texts correctly following the process, ensuring the steps formed and practiced in previous classes; have knowledge about intellectual property rights and avoiding plagiarism.

Writing Practice

- Write an argumentative text on a social issue; clearly present viewpoints and arguments; have a coherent structure; use convincing evidence: accurate, reliable, appropriate, and sufficient.

- Write an analytical and evaluative argumentative text about a literary work: theme, distinctive artistic features, and their effects.

- Write a persuasive essay persuading others to give up a habit or opinion.

- Write an essay about oneself.

- Write a set of rules or public guidelines.

- Write a research report on an issue, using citations, footnotes, and appropriate auxiliary means.
SPEAKING AND LISTENING

Speaking

- Able to present on a social issue using combined linguistic and non-linguistic communication means.

- Present a report on a research result or experiential activity.

- Able to introduce and evaluate the content and artistic qualities of a literary work (based on personal choice).

Listening

- Listen and grasp the content and viewpoint of the speaker during a presentation. Able to comment on the content and form of the presentation.

- Some elements of epics and myths: space, time, plot, narrator, characters, narrator's voice and character's voice, etc.; value and vitality of epics

- Aesthetic value of some formal elements in poetry

- Some elements of folk theater scripts like chèo or tuồng: anonymity, themes, plot, characters, dialogues, methods of transmission, etc.

- Historical context or cultural, social context and the literary work

- Basic knowledge about Nguyen Trai to help comprehend some key works of this author
