Guidelines for grade 5 students in Vietnam: How to calculate the lateral surface area of the rectangular prism?
The formula for calculating the lateral surface area of a rectangular prism is one of the lessons found in grade 5 mathematics.
The lateral surface area of a rectangular prism is the total area of all the side faces of that rectangular prism. That is to say, we will calculate the area of the four surrounding faces (excluding the two base faces).
The lateral surface area of a rectangular prism in grade 5 is calculated as follows:
To calculate the lateral surface area of a rectangular prism, multiply the perimeter of the base by the height (using the same unit of measure). lateral surface area = Perimeter of Base x Height |
*Example:
If a rectangular prism has a length of 8cm, a width of 5cm, and a height of 3cm, then:
Perimeter of base: (8 + 5) x 2 = 26cm
Lateral surface area: 26cm x 3cm = 78cm²
*Exercise:
A rectangular fish tank has a length of 80cm, a width of 50cm, and a height of 40cm. Calculate the area of glass needed to make the fish tank (excluding the lid).
Solution:
Perimeter of the tank base: (80 + 50) x 2 = 260cm
Lateral surface area of the tank: 260cm x 40cm = 10400cm²
Area of one base: 80cm x 50cm = 4000cm²
Total glass area needed: 10400cm² + 4000cm² = 14400cm²
Answer: 14400cm²

What is the purpose of Math for grade 5 students in Vietnam?
Based on Section III of the Appendix of the General Education Curriculum for Math issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the teaching of Math for grade 5 has the following characteristics:
- The primary education aim of Math is to help students achieve the following main objectives:
+ Contribute to forming and developing mathematical competence with achievable requirements: performing thought processes at a basic level; stating and answering questions when reasoning, solving simple problems; choosing arithmetic operations and formulas to present and convey (verbally or in writing) contents, ideas, and methods for solving problems; using mathematical language in combination with common language and body gestures to express mathematical content in simple situations; using basic mathematical tools and means to perform simple mathematical tasks.
- Acquire basic and essential initial knowledge and skills about:
+ Numbers and operations: Natural numbers, fractions, decimals and their operations.
+ Geometry and Measurement: Observing, recognizing, describing shapes and characteristics (at a visual level) of some flat shapes and solids in real life; creating some simple geometric models; calculating some geometric quantities; developing spatial imagination; solving some practical problems associated with Geometry and Measurement (using common measurement units).
+ Statistics and Probability: Some basic statistics and probability; solving some practical problems associated with basic statistics and probability.
- Along with other subjects and educational activities such as: Ethics, Nature and Society, Experiential Activities,... contribute to providing students with an initial understanding of some professions in society.
What is the purpose of specialized math topics for grade 5 in Vietnam?
Based on Section V of the Appendix of the General Education Curriculum for Math issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the specialized math topics for grade 5 are as follows:
In each class during the career-oriented education phase, students (especially those oriented towards natural sciences and technology) can choose to study some specialized topics.
The purposes of these specialized topics are:
- Providing additional mathematical knowledge and skills to meet deep differentiation requirements (e.g., mathematical induction; systems of first-order linear equations in three variables; discrete random variables and the characteristics of discrete random variables; plane transformations; technical drawing; some elements of graph theory); creating opportunities for students to apply mathematics to solve interdisciplinary and practical problems, contributing to forming the scientific basis for STEM education (e.g., knowledge about systems of first-order linear equations enabling the resolution of some physics problems about calculating resistance, the intensity of direct current,...; balancing reactions in some chemistry problems,...; some biology problems about mitosis, meiosis,...; using calculus to solve some optimization problems about distance, time, economics;...).
- Helping students deeply understand the role and applications of Mathematics in real life; gaining an understanding of careers related to Mathematics and its value as a foundation for career guidance after high school.
- Creating opportunities for students to recognize talents, interests, develop enthusiasm and confidence in studying Mathematics; developing mathematical competence and the ability to explore mathematics-related issues throughout their lives.
