What are the differences between competency assessment and thinking skills assessment in Vietnam?

In Clause 1, Article 6 of the Regulations on Enrollment full-time undergraduate programs in Early Childhood Education issued together with Circular 08/2022/TT-BGDĐT, education and training institutions can choose the methods of enrollment (entrance examination, admission examination, or combination of entrance examination and admission), generally applied to the whole education and training institution or separately applied to a number of programs, industries, fields and forms of training.

Competency assessment and thinking skills assessment are both exams organized separately by universities and exam results shall be used for admission.

The below contents are the differences between competency assessment and thinking skills assessment conducted at Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, and Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

What are the contents of the Thinking Skills Assessment of Hanoi University of Science and Technology during 2023-2024?

According to the Web Portal of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the contents of the Thinking Skills Assessment of Hanoi University of Science and Technology in 2024 will remain the same as in 2023

- The 2023 Thinking Skills Assessment consists of three sections: Mathematical Thinking (60 minutes), Reading Comprehension (30 minutes), and Scientific Thinking/Problem Solving (60 minutes) with three levels of Thinking Skills Assessment (regenerative thinking, critical thinking and higher-order thinking).

- The questions are developed in the form of multiple choice with four types of structure: Choose true, true/false answers, drag and drop, and short answers.

- Unlike other exams, the TSA exam does not focus on testing knowledge, so it does not require candidates to spend much time reviewing, because thinking training has been formed during the learning process.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology also added:

- In 2023, the TSA is considered to have many favorable points for students' test-taking process. The test is lightly adjusted (150 minutes in duration) and organized in the form of multiple choice on a computer.

- Students can use the expanded TSA results to apply for admissions majors, including Science and Technology, Economics, Engineering, Industry, Agriculture, Finance, Banking, and Medicine.

TSA tests are scheduled for Saturdays/Sundays:

- Phase 1: December 2 - 3, 2023;

- Phase 2: January 20 - 21, 2024;

- Phase 3: March 9 - 10, 2024;

- Phase 4: April 27 - 28, 2024;

- Phase 5: June 8 - 9, 2024;

- Phase 6: June 15 - 16, 2024.
