According to the provisions of Article 112 of the 2019 Labor Code, the content is as follows:
Public holidays
1. Employees shall be entitled to fully paid days off on the following public holidays:
a) Gregorian Calendar New Year Holiday: 01 day (the 1st of January of the Gregorian calendar);
b) Lunar New Year Holidays: 05 days;
c) Victory Day: 01 day (the 30th of April of the Gregorian calendar);
d) International Labor Day: 01 day (the 1st of May of the Gregorian calendar);
dd) National Day: 02 days (the 2nd of September of the Gregorian calendar and the previous or next day);
e) Hung Kings Commemoration Day: 01 day (the 10th of the third month of the Lunar calendar).
2. Foreign employees in Vietnam are entitled to 01 traditional public holiday and 01 National Day of their country, in addition to the public holidays stipulated in Clause 1 of this Article.
3. The Prime Minister shall decide the specific public holidays mentioned in Point b and Point dd Clause 1 of this Article on an annual basis.
Accordingly, employees shall be entitled to fully paid days off on Lunar New Year 2024 according to the following regulations:
- Lunar New Year Holidays: 05 days;
The official 2024 Lunar New Year holiday schedule is as follows:
According to Announcement 5015/TB-LDTBXH in 2023, the 2024 Lunar New Year will include a total of 7 days off (05 days of the Lunar New Year holiday and 02 days of compensatory time-off for the weekly days off).
Specifically, officials and public employees are entitled to have the Lunar New Year holiday in 2024 from:
Thursday, February 08, 2024 of the solar calendar (i.e. December 29, 2023 of the lunar calendar) to the end of Wednesday, February 14, 2024 of the solar calendar (i.e. January 05, 2024 of the lunar calendar).
For employees who are not civil servants, the 2024 Lunar New Year holiday schedule will be according to the employer's decision.
Thus, employers may adopt the following holiday schedule for Lunar New Year and National Day in 2024:
- The Lunar New Year holiday may include 01 ending day of the year 2023 and 04 beginning days of the year 2024 of the lunar calendar, or 02 ending days of the year 2023 and 03 beginning days of the year 2024 of the lunar calendar, or 03 ending days of the year 2023 and 02 beginning days of the year 2024 of the lunar calendar.
- In case a weekly day off coincides with a public holiday, employees will have compensatory time-off on the next business day
What do the 2024 public holidays in Vietnam include?
According to the provisions of Article 112 of the 2019 Labor Code:
Public holidays

dd) National Day: 02 days (the 2nd of September of the Gregorian calendar and the previous or next day);

2. Foreign employees in Vietnam are entitled to 01 traditional public holiday and 01 National Day of their country, in addition to the public holidays stipulated in Clause 1 of this Article.
3. The Prime Minister shall decide the specific public holidays mentioned in Point b and Point dd Clause 1 of this Article on an annual basis.
Accordingly, employees will be entitled to a total of 11 days off for the public holidays mentioned above and receive full salary.
- In case a weekly day off coincides with a public holiday, employees will have compensatory time-off on the next business day
- Regarding the Gregorian New Year 2024: In 2024, January 1 falls on a Monday, so workers will only have a day off on January 1 and there will be no make-up day off. However, if we consider the weekend days of the previous week, workers will have a 2 or 3-day long holiday for the Gregorian New Year 2024, depending on their specific circumstances.
- Regarding the Lunar New Year holiday in 2024: On November 3, 2023, the Government Office issued Official Dispact No. 8662/VPCP-KGVX, which confirmed the plan for the Lunar New Year holiday from February 8, 2024 to February 14, 2024.
Accordingly, officials, public employees, and employees who have their days off on Saturdays and Sundays will have a 7-day long Lunar New Year holiday, from Thursday, February 8, 2024 (i.e December 29, 2023 of the lunar calendar) to Wednesday, February 14, 2024 (i.e January 5, 2024 of the lunar calendar).
This holiday period includes 5 days for the Lunar New Year and 2 days to compensate for the regular weekly days off as stipulated in the Labor Law.
Enterprises will arrange the Lunar New Year holiday schedule accordingly, ensuring the rights and benefits of workers with one of the three options: 01 ending day of the year 2023 and 04 beginning days of the year 2024 of the lunar calendar, or 02 ending days of the year 2023 and 03 beginning days of the year 2024 of the lunar calendar, or 03 ending days of the year 2023 and 02 beginning days of the year 2024 of the lunar calendar.
- Regarding the Hung Kings' Commemoration Day (March 10 of the Lunar Calendar): In 2024, the Hung Kings' Commemoration Day falls on Thursday, April 18, 2024, which is a working day for employees, so they will only have one day off on Thursday, April 18, 2024.
- Regarding the Victory Day (April 30th) and International Labor Day (May 1st): In 2024, April 30th and May 1st fall on Tuesday (April 30, 2024) and Wednesday (May 1, 2024) respectively.
Since these two days also fall on working days, workers will not have any make-up day off.
Therefore, the holiday for April 30th and May 1st, 2024 will last for 2 days, from Tuesday, April 30, 2024 to Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
- Regarding the National Day (September 2nd): According to Official Dispact No. 8662/VPCP-KGVX issued in 2023, the Government has chosen the option to have the National Day holiday from August 31, 2024 to September 3, 2024.
Accordingly, the National Day holiday in 2024 will last for 4 days, from Saturday, August 31, 2024 to Tuesday, September 3, 2024.
In addition, workers in the business area can choose to have a holiday from Monday, September 2, 2024 in the Gregorian calendar and choose one of the two Sundays, either September 1, 2024, or September 3, 2024.
Note: Foreign employees in Vietnam are entitled to 01 traditional public holiday and 01 National Day of their country, in addition to the public holidays.
