Lunar New Year Holiday 2023 in Hanoi: Officials, Public Employees, and Employees to Have 7 Days Off

Recently, according to the latest document on December 1, 2022, considering the proposal from the Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs regarding the Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2023, Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam Vu Duc Dam agreed with the option to extend the Lunar New Year 2023 holiday to 7 days.

The Schedule for the Lunar New Year Holiday 2023 for officials, public employees, and employees, will start from Friday, January 20, 2023 (the 29th day of the 12th lunar month of 2022) to the end of Thursday, January 26, 2023 (the 5th day of the 1st lunar month of 2023).

Official Schedule for Lunar New Year Holiday 2023: 7 consecutive days off

Previously, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs had submitted to the Prime Minister both plans for the Lunar New Year 2023 holiday.

Plan 1 is to have the holiday from Friday (January 20, 2023) to the end of Thursday (January 26, 2023), which means from the 29th day of the 12th lunar month of 2022 to the end of the 5th day of the 1st lunar month of 2023.

This plan ensures that the number of holiday days is not too long (7 continuous days), balances the number of days off before the New Year (2 days) and after the New Year, facilitates the travel and shopping for the New Year, and is agreed upon by the majority of ministries and central authorities.

Plan 2: Officials and public employees will have the Lunar New Year 2023 holiday from Saturday (January 21, 2023) to the end of Sunday (January 29, 2023), which means from the 30th day of the 12th lunar month of 2022 to the end of the 8th day of the 1st lunar month of 2023.

The Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs assessed that this plan, although providing a long holiday (9 continuous days), offers only 1 day off during the old year (New Year's Eve), which pressures traffic, travel, and shopping for the New Year. This plan was chosen by only 2 ministries and central authorities.

The Minister of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) is authorized to announce the Lunar New Year and National Day holidays for 2023.

The Government of Vietnam also requests that agencies and units implementing the above holiday schedule should reasonably arrange working departments to ensure continuous work and guarantee good service to organizations and the public.
