What is the campaign that ended the Indochina War?
To answer the question "What is the campaign that ended the Indochina War?", we look back at the period from 1946 to 1954.
The campaign that ended the Indochina War was the Dien Bien Phu Campaign – one of the brilliant milestones in Vietnam's national history. This was the largest strategic decisive battle, lasting from March 13 to May 7, 1954, with the participation of more than 40,000 of our troops and tens of thousands of laborers, creating a historic victory of epochal significance. This victory not only crushed the strongest French colonial fortification at Dien Bien Phu, but also rendered the French army incapable of fighting, shattering hopes of maintaining colonial military presence in Indochina.
The direct result of the campaign was the forced signing of the Geneva Accords by France on July 20, 1954, thereby completely ending the war and restoring peace in Indochina. This agreement stipulated the withdrawal of French troops from Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, and temporarily divided Vietnam at the 17th parallel, preparing for a nationwide election to unify the country. The victory at Dien Bien Phu not only helped liberate half of the country but also set the premise for the Vietnamese people to continue the resistance against the United States and unify the nation later.
Furthermore, the victory of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign also held profound international significance. It marked the collapse of old colonialism and became a source of inspiration for independence movements across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. With its great magnitude and immense significance, the Dien Bien Phu Campaign was the decisive campaign that ended the Indochina War, leading Vietnam and the countries in the region into a new chapter of independence and freedom.
