When did the third battle of Duc Lap in Vietnam occur?
The Third Battle of Don Duc Lap took place on the morning of November 20, 1965, during the peak period of the resistance against the United States. Don Duc Lap, located in Duc Lap commune (now Duc Lap Thuong, Duc Hoa district, Long An province), was a strategic stronghold of the Saigon army, situated on a vital transportation route connecting the Dong Thap Muoi area and the Southeast region. It was heavily fortified and well-equipped, serving as a blockade to prevent the revolutionary forces' activities in Long An, a place known for its "resolute and resilient spirit, with all people fighting the enemy."
The third assault on Don Duc Lap was one of the major campaigns by the local army and people, meticulously planned with cooperation between armed forces and the populace. The attack occurred at night, leveraging the element of surprise, targeting weak points in the enemy's defenses.
The liberation army launched multiple attacks using tactics that combined ambush and encirclement, quickly breaching the defensive system, annihilating a significant number of enemy troops, and gaining control over the fort in a short period. Following the victory, our troops and people completely liberated Duc Lap commune, causing substantial losses in enemy manpower and war equipment, and disrupting the supply lines from nearby bases.
This victory not only affirmed military strength but also demonstrated the unyielding determination of the Long An military and people in their struggle against the United States forces and the Saigon government. Militarily, the battle showcased the significant maturity of the Southern revolutionary forces in planning, commanding, and executing campaigns.
Politically and spiritually, the triumph at Duc Lap elevated the people's confidence in the cause of national liberation, while simultaneously shaking the invader's resolve. It exemplified the art of people's warfare, seamlessly combining armed forces and public support, contributing to momentum for other important victories in the resistance against the U.S. to save the nation.
