What content criteria of the textbooks in Vietnam?​

According to Article 5 of the Regulations on Standards, Procedures for Compiling, Editing Textbooks, and Standards for Organizations, Individuals Compiling Textbooks; Organization and Activities of the National Council for Textbook Evaluation issued together with Circular 33/2017/TT-BGDDT regarding textbook content, the textbook content must meet the following criteria:

- The textbook content must accurately and fully reflect the content of the subject program or educational activities.

- Ensure the basic, scientific, practical nature, compatible with the reality of Vietnam.

- Ensure accuracy, objectivity, consistency, and appropriateness of terms, concepts, definitions, data, events, and images for students' level.

- Data, events, and images must have clear sources.

- New scientific accomplishments related to the subject program or educational activities must be updated, meeting international integration requirements and aligning with the objectives of the subject program or educational activities.

- Education content on national sovereignty, human rights, children's rights, gender equality, sustainable development, environmental protection, and climate change adaptation should be reasonably presented.

Furthermore, the principle of textbook compilation must be noted according to Article 3 of the Regulations on Standards, Procedures for Compiling, Editing Textbooks, and Standards for Organizations, Individuals Compiling Textbooks; Organization and Activities of the National Council for Textbook Evaluation issued together with Circular 33/2017/TT-BGDDT, as follows:

[1] Align with the views, guidelines of the Communist Party of Vietnam; comply with the Constitution and laws of Vietnam.

[2] To be specific: concretize the objectives, content, educational methods, and evaluate the results of general education programs; ensure continuity between educational levels, grades, subjects, and educational activities.

[3] Connect with the specific conditions of Vietnam and align with advanced global education trends, ensuring the best interests of learners.

Simultaneously, according to Article 5 of the Regulations on Standards, Procedures for Compiling, Editing Textbooks, and Standards for Organizations, Individuals Compiling Textbooks; Organization and Activities of the National Council for Textbook Evaluation issued together with Circular 33/2017/TT-BGDDT, textbook content must ensure as follows:

- The textbook content must accurately and fully reflect the content of the subject program or educational activities; ensure the basic, scientific, practical nature, and compatibility with the reality of Vietnam.

- Ensure accuracy, objectivity, consistency, and appropriateness of terms, concepts, definitions, data, events, and images for students' level; data, events, and images must have clear sources.

- New scientific accomplishments related to the subject program or educational activities must be updated, meeting international integration requirements and aligning with the objectives of the subject program or educational activities.

- Education content on national sovereignty, human rights, children's rights, gender equality, sustainable development, environmental protection, and climate change adaptation should be reasonably presented.

What language shall be used in Grade 6 textbooks in Vietnam?

According to Article 8 of the Regulations on Standards, Procedures for Compiling, Editing Textbooks, and Standards for Organizations, Individuals Compiling Textbooks; Organization and Activities of the National Council for Textbook Evaluation issued together with Circular 33/2017/TT-BGDDT (mended and supplemented by Clause 1, Article 1 of Circular 05/2022/TT-BGDDT), the language used in textbooks and the presentation format of textbooks is as follows:

1. The language used in textbooks is Vietnamese (for foreign language textbooks and textbooks in ethnic minority languages, additional appropriate languages may be used according to the subject content), ensuring spelling and grammar regulations, abbreviations, symbols, phonetic transcriptions; clear, easy-to-understand expressions accurately reflecting the content to be presented, suitable for students' age.

2. The presentation format of textbooks should be balanced and harmonious between text and images, including symbols, icons, font styles, and font sizes.

3. Illustrations, photos, tables, charts, maps, diagrams in textbooks should be clear, accurate, updated, aesthetically pleasing, suitable for the lesson content and students' age, and clearly indicate the sources.

4. The book size, text block size, number of lines per text block, number of words per line, paper quality (weight, whiteness, opacity, gloss, permeability), cover paper quality and weight, ink quality must meet national standards for books.

Thus, textbooks in general as well as Grade 6 textbooks used in Vietnam are in Vietnamese.

However, additional languages appropriate to the subject content are used for foreign language textbooks and textbooks in ethnic minority languages.

- The language must be clear, easy to understand, accurately reflecting the content to be presented, and strictly adhering to the general grammar and spelling regulations of Vietnamese.

- Besides language criteria, other criteria such as book size, illustrations, tables in textbooks must comply with legal regulations.

- Illustrations, photos, tables, charts, maps, diagrams in textbooks must be clear, accurate, aesthetically pleasing, suitable for students' age, lesson content, and indicate specific sources.
