What is the main educational method for the General Education Program for English in Vietnam?

Under Section 6 of the General Education Program for English issued in conjunction with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT:

VI. EDUCATIONAL METHODS

The main educational method in the General Education Program for English is the communicative language teaching. This approach allows the use of various teaching methods, emphasizing the formation and development of students' communicative competence, and the ability to use grammatical rules to create correct and appropriate sentences through listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. This approach has similarities with student-centered learning in pedagogy. These two main approaches redefine the roles of teachers and students in the teaching-learning process.

1. Teacher's Role

In the communicative language teaching approach, the teacher assumes multiple roles, with the following four being prominent: (i) instructor and educator, (ii) adviser, (iii) participant in the learning process, (iv) learner and researcher.

Acting as an instructor and educator, the teacher helps students learn knowledge and develop communication skills in English, educating them to become good, responsible citizens.

Acting as an adviser, the teacher facilitates communication within the classroom, between students and the textbook, and other learning resources.

Acting as an adviser in the learning process, the teacher will help themselves understand what students need during the learning process, what their interests are, and what they can do independently to transfer some tasks to self-management; encouraging students to express their intentions clearly to enhance their active and creative roles in learning; guiding students' active participation in the most practical goals when learning English to achieve high learning efficiency.

Thus, the main educational method for the General Education Program for English is communicative language teaching.
