What are requirements for developing the grade 5 mathematics curriculum in Vietnam?
Based on Section 2 of the mathematics education program of the general education curriculum issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT:
The mathematics curriculum thoroughly implements the basic regulations stated in the overall program;
Inherit and promote the advantages of the current program and previous programs, selectively absorb experiences in developing subject programs from advanced countries around the world, approach advancements in educational science, considering Vietnam's economic and social conditions.
At the same time, the mathematics program emphasizes several perspectives as follows:
- Ensure brevity, practicality, modernity
The mathematics program ensures brevity, practicality, modernity reflected in addressing contents that must be mentioned in general education, meeting the need to understand the world as well as learners' interests and preferences, consistent with today's global approach. The program thoroughly implements the spirit of “mathematics for everyone,” allowing everyone to learn mathematics but in a way that suits individual preferences and abilities.
The mathematics program focuses on application, connecting with real life or other subjects and educational activities, especially with subjects aimed at implementing STEM education, in line with modern development trends in economics, science, social life, and pressing global issues (such as climate change, sustainable development, financial education,...).
This is also reflected through practical activities and experiences in mathematical education with various forms such as: conducting topics, learning projects about Mathematics, especially topics and projects on applying mathematics in practice.
Organizing mathematics games, mathematics clubs, forums, seminars, mathematics competitions,... create opportunities for students to apply their knowledge, skills, and experiences in a creative manner.
Thus, grade 5 mathematics must have a streamlined and modern program.
What basic teaching equipment is required for grade 5 Mathematics according to the law in Vietnam?
Based on subsection 3 of Section 8 of the mathematics curriculum issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the basic teaching equipment for the mathematics subject is as follows:
(1) The teaching equipment for mathematics should contain, describe knowledge that can support teachers and students in focusing on specific mathematical objects (concepts, relationships, properties,...) to explore, research, deepen knowledge,... during the mathematics learning process.
(2) The use of teaching equipment for mathematics must ensure several requirements as follows:
- The teaching equipment must serve the teaching objectives of mathematics, suit the content learned, and the students, support innovative teaching methods, and avoid increasing teaching content, tasks of the teachers unnecessarily.
- Use them properly, at the right time and place, avoid formalism or overuse that counteracts, reducing the efficiency of the teaching process; allow students to truly practice, manipulate the teaching equipment, thereby helping them actively and positively explore and discover knowledge and contribute to developing the "ability to use mathematical tools and means."
- Encourage the use of audiovisual means, modern technical means to support the teaching process while valuing the use of traditional means. When conditions allow, teachers guide students on how to search for information, materials on the Internet or reputable educational television programs to expand their knowledge and self-learning ability.
- Strengthen self-made teaching equipment: Besides the minimal teaching equipment prescribed in the list issued by the Ministry of Education and Training, initiatives and creativity of students, teachers, and parents should be mobilized in exploiting, designing, and using self-made teaching equipment.
- Flexibly combine using different types of teaching equipment: Each type of teaching equipment has certain advantages and limitations, therefore, depending on the lesson content, teaching methods that can combine using different types of teaching equipment and coordinate reasonably, scientifically, and vividly.
(3) Based on the objectives and requirements that need to be achieved by the mathematics program, the Ministry of Education and Training issues a list of minimal teaching equipment, ensuring enough in quantity and type. Specifically::
+ Numbers and Calculations: Includes teaching equipment sets about Natural numbers and operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with natural numbers; Fractions and operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with fractions; Decimals and Decimal operations; Percentages.
+ Geometry and Measurement: Includes teaching equipment sets for identifying, describing the shape and characteristics of some plane and solid figures; practice measuring, drawing, assembling, sculpting (corresponding to each grade's mathematics curriculum); practicing weighing, measuring, counting, checking time, trading.
+ Some elements of statistics and probability: Includes teaching equipment sets for reading, describing, representing data into tables, statistical graphs; getting familiar with the possibility of an event occurring.
