What is a pet rock?

Pet rock is a unique cultural phenomenon that emerged in the 1970s in the United States. It may sound absurd, but smooth stones, devoid of any biological features, became a "trend" pursued by many.

What is a pet rock?

Origin:

The idea of a pet rock was conceived by a man named Gary Dahl. He noticed that many people complained about how expensive and time-consuming pet care could be. Thus, he came up with the idea of creating a "perfect pet": no feeding, no walking, no illness, and easy to care for.

In 1975, Dahl released stones packaged in a box, accompanied by a book on how to "care" for the rock. These stones were advertised as ideal "pets," requiring no special care.

Popularity:

Initially, the idea seemed crazy, but it unexpectedly garnered a significant amount of public attention. In a short period, pet rocks became a global cultural phenomenon. Millions of people bought pet rocks, considering them as true companions.

Reason for Success:

Uniqueness and Humor: The idea of a rock as a pet is so unique and humorous, it piqued people's curiosity.

Simplicity: Unlike traditional pets, pet rocks require no care, suitable for busy individuals or those with limited time.

A Form of Rebellion: pet rocks can be seen as a form of rebellion against excessive consumerism and the complexities of modern life.

Decline:

However, the pet rock craze quickly cooled down. After a short period, the novelty of this product gradually faded, and people returned to traditional pets.

Business Lessons:

Though just a temporary phenomenon, the success of pet rocks provided valuable business lessons. It highlighted the importance of creating unique products, meeting the psychological needs of customers, and leveraging cultural trends to generate revenue.

Prohibited acts for students

1. Disrespect the dignity, honor or bodily integrity of teachers, officials and staff of their schools, other people and other students.

2. Act dishonestly in learning, examinations or admission process.

3. Buy, sell or use alcohol, tobacco, drugs, other stimulants, firecrackers or explosives.

Under the above regulations, using pet rocks is not harmful to healthy development but is merely an entertaining toy. However, using pet rocks during class will greatly affect learning, cause distraction, and lack of attention to lessons. Prolonged distraction can affect lower secondary school students' academic performance.

Therefore, in some cases, when teachers notice students playing with pet rocks during class, they may remind or confiscate the toys if necessary to help students focus more during class.
