What are methods of assessment of outcomes of English subject in Vietnam?
Based on Section VII of the General Education Program for English, issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the assessment of educational outcomes for English at the primary level is as follows:
- Testing and assessment are crucial elements in the teaching process, providing feedback on the level of communicative competence in English that students achieve during and at the end of a learning stage.
- This contributes to encouraging and guiding students in their learning process, aiding teachers and schools in evaluating student learning outcomes, and thereby effectively adjusting the teaching of the subject at different education levels.
- The assessment of student learning activities must align with the objectives and content of the Program, based on the requirements needed for communication skills at each grade level, aiming to help students achieve the stipulated levels of communication competence by the end of primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary education.
- Assessment activities need to be carried out in two forms: continuous assessment and periodic assessment. Continuous assessment is conducted constantly through classroom teaching activities.
- During the teaching process, continuous assessment should be prioritized to help students and teachers track the progress of achieving the objectives set out in the Program. Periodic assessment is conducted at fixed times during the school year to evaluate the level of achievement against the required standards set for each grade level.
- Final assessments at the end of primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary education must be based on foreign language proficiency requirements according to the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam, specifically Level 1 for primary, Level 2 for lower secondary, and Level 3 for upper secondary education.
- Assessment is conducted through various forms such as quantitative, qualitative, and a combination of both during the entire learning process, incorporating teacher assessments, peer evaluations among students, and self-assessment by students.
- The types of testing and assessment should be suitable for the teaching methods applied in the classroom, including oral tests (dialogue, monologue) and written tests that integrate language skills and knowledge, combining multiple-choice, essays, and other assessment forms.
Assessment activities need to be carried out in two forms: continuous assessment and periodic assessment.
Thus, the assessment of educational outcomes for English is conducted through two forms: continuous assessment and periodic assessment.
