What is a literary work?
- A literary work is an artistic creation through language, expressing the author's thoughts, emotions, and views about life, people, and society. It is the result of a creative process, combining the writer's talent, intellect, and soul.
*Characteristics of a Literary Work:
- Artistic quality: Using language rich in imagery, sound, and emotion to create unique works that leave a strong impression on the reader.
- Humanity: Deeply reflecting the issues of people and society, prompting reflections on life.
- Creativity: Bringing fresh perspectives and unique ideas about life.
- Historical significance: Truthfully reflecting social life in a specific period, contributing to the cultural wealth of the nation.
*Types of Literary Works:
Prose: Novels, short stories, long stories, essays, memoirs...
Poetry: Lục bát poetry, free verse, folk songs, proverbs...
Plays: Tragedy, comedy, satire...

When will students in Vietnam learn literary works?
Based on Section III of the Appendix to the Literature Program in general education issued along with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the objective for the literature program at each educational level is as follows:
* Objectives for Lower Secondary Education
- Help students continue to develop the good qualities formed in primary school; elevate and expand the requirements for character development with specific manifestations such as: pride in national history and literature; having dreams and aspirations, self-study spirit, and self-respect, having a sense of citizenship, and respecting the law.
- Continue developing common skills, language skills, and literary skills formed in primary school with higher requirements. Develop language skills with the requirements: distinguishing types of literary texts, argumentative texts, and informational texts; understanding both explicit and implicit content of different types of texts; writing complete, coherent, logical, correct, and process-following narrative, descriptive, expressive, argumentative, expository, practical essays combining various expressive modes; speaking clearly and coherently; having self-confidence and appropriateness in communicative context; understanding with appropriate attitudes.
Develop literary skills with requirements: distinguishing genres such as stories, poems, essays, literature scripts and specific sub-genres; recognizing characteristics of literary language, identifying, and analyzing the effects of formal elements and artistic methods associated with each literary genre; recognizing expressive value, cognitive value, aesthetic value; analyzing the imagery, content, and form of a literary work; being able to create some literary products.
* Objectives for Upper Secondary Education
- Help students continue to develop the qualities formed in lower secondary school; expand and elevate the requirements for character development with specific manifestations: having courage, personality, ideals and ambitions, maintaining and promoting Vietnamese cultural values; having global integration spirit and global citizenship awareness.
- Continue developing the skills formed in lower secondary school with higher requirements: understanding both explicit and implicit content of different types of texts at a higher difficulty level through quantity, content, and reading requirements; understanding with critical thinking; applying knowledge of literary language characteristics, literary trends, author styles, works, internal and external textual elements to develop independent reading skills. Writing proficiently in argumentative and comprehensive explanatory types (combining various expressive modes and argumentative maneuvers), methodically, with clear opinions, ensuring logic, and persuasive power. Flexible speaking and listening skills; ability to listen and evaluate the content and form of expression of presentations; participating actively and with personal viewpoints, personality, and appropriate debate attitude in discussions.
Develop literary skills with requirements: distinguishing between literary works and works of other forms of art; analyzing and commenting on the characteristics of literary language; distinguishing expression and meaning in literature; identifying, analyzing, and appreciating literature.
Thus, exposure to literary works in the Literature subject begins at the lower secondary level and continues at the upper secondary level.

The mandatory folk literary works in the general education program include the following genres:
- Vietnamese folk stories: legend, fairy tale, fable, funny story
- Folk songs on topics: homeland; love, family feelings; people and society (lyrical or sarcastic)
- Vietnamese epic
- Narrative poems of Vietnamese ethnic minorities
