(1) What is a compound word?
A compound word is a word formed by two or more syllables. Simply put, a compound word is a compound word. It is formed by combining similar or different syllables to create a meaningful word.
(2) Characteristics of compound words:
- A compound word is a compound word. In which:
+ A compound word is a subset of compound words composed of two or more syllables combined.
Example: nhà ở, xe cộ, ruộng vườn, giao thông…
+ Onomatopoeic words are also a part of compound words, formed by two syllables that have a phonetic relationship. The purpose of onomatopoeic words is to make language more poetic and enhance appropriate emphasis.
Example: Rầm rầm, khanh khách, lung linh…
- A compound word is formed by multiple syllables.
Additionally, regarding the meaning of the syllables forming a compound word, there are the following cases:
- Each separate syllable has its own meaning.
Example: vui vẻ
+ "Vui" is a simple word that denotes the mental state of a person or a conscious entity.
+ "Vẻ" is also a simple word indicating the shape, appearance, or demeanor of a person or animal.
- Each syllable does not have a clear meaning separately.
Example: lay láy (Neither of these syllables has a clear meaning on its own).
- When separated, some syllables have clear meanings, and some do not.
Example: pretty
"Xinh" has a clear meaning, while "xắn" does not have a clear meaning.
Therefore, compound words are structurally formed by the combination of syllables, but their meaning does not depend on any single syllable within the word.
