Guidelines on preparing the lesson Kiều ở lầu Ngưng Bích for grade 9 students in Vietnam

I. Understanding the Work "Kiều ở lầu Ngưng Bích"

1. Author

Great poet Nguyen Du was born in 1765 and passed away in 1820, his literary name was To Nhu, and his alias was Thanh Hien. He was from Tien Dien village, Nghi Xuan district, Ha Tinh province. He was born into a prominent aristocratic family with a tradition in literature, and his father held the position of Prime Minister.

2. The Work

- Verse form: Lục bát

- Structure: 3 parts

+ First 6 lines: Thuy Kieu's pitiful loneliness.

+ Next 8 lines: Kieu's yearning for Kim Trong and her parents.

+ Last 8 lines: Her sorrow and foreboding of a stormy future.

- Content value: Realistically depicting the pitiful, lonely, and sorrowful situation, the deep yearning for loved ones, and Thuy Kieu's faithful, filial, and selfless heart when she was confined at the Ngu Bich Pavilion.

- Artistic value: Outstanding internal monologue description with the most distinctive scene-based expression technique in "The Tale of Kieu."

II. Preparing for the Lesson "Kiều ở lầu Ngưng Bích"

Question 1: How many parts can the excerpt "Kiều ở lầu Ngưng Bích" be divided into? What is its main content?

The excerpt can be divided into 3 parts with the following content:

- First 6 lines: Thuy Kieu's pitiful loneliness when at the Ngu Bich Pavilion.

- Next 8 lines: Expressing Kieu's yearning for Kim Trong and her parents.

- Last 8 lines: Describing Kieu's sorrow and her premonition of future storms.

Question 2: How does the scenery described in the first six lines contribute to expressing Thuy Kieu's mood?

The scenery in front of the Ngu Bich Pavilion is described from a high vantage point. The author uses the compound word “bốn bề” next to the repetitive “bát ngát” to depict a vast, empty space, thus reflecting the emptiness in Kieu's soul. The repetitive “bẽ bàng” expresses Kieu's shame and regret, her mind still reflecting recent events: being humiliated by Ma Giam Sinh, forced into prostitution, and now being confined here. The comparison “Nửa tình nửa cảnh như chia tấm lòng” conveys that Kieu's heart is split between feelings and scenery. The six lines are constructed with the scenic-expression technique, describing the desolate, isolated landscape to vividly portray Kieu's loneliness.

Question 3: Whom does Thuy Kieu miss in sequence? Do you find this order rational? Why?

First, Kieu misses Kim Trong, then she remembers her parents. In my opinion, this sequence is partly rational because Kieu fulfilled her filial duty by selling herself to save her father, and she met her parents before selling herself. However, Kieu did not meet Kim Trong before sacrificing herself, which leaves her feeling guilty and regretful.

Question 4: According to you, whose words are the eight lines from line 7 to line 14 in the excerpt? How do you know that? What is the effect of these words in expressing the character's internal state?

The lines are Thuy Kieu's words. These lines express Kieu's deep longing for her lover Kim Trong and her parents.

With his delicate pen, Nguyen Du described Thuy Kieu's psyche truthfully and vividly. In just eight lines, he vividly portrayed Kieu's state when confined at the Ngu Bich Pavilion: lonely, lost, and uncertain about the future. Yet, Nguyen Du also depicted Thuy Kieu as a deeply filial and loyal person.

Question 5: "Kiều ở lầu Ngưng Bích" is considered one of the excerpts that showcase Nguyen Du's talent in the scenic-expression technique. Analyze the last eight lines to clarify this point.

"Buồn trông cửa bể chiều hôm,

Thuyền ai thấp thoáng cánh buồm xa xa?

Buồn trông ngọn nước mới sa,

Hoa trôi man mác biết là về đâu?

Buồn trông nội cỏ dầu dầu,

Chân mây mặt đất một màu xanh xanh.

Buồn trông gió cuốn mặt duyềnh,

Ầm ầm tiếng sóng kêu quanh ghế ngồi."

The last eight lines of the excerpt "Kiều ở lầu Ngưng Bích" are the pinnacle of Nguyen Du's scenic-expression technique. These lines can be divided into four sections, or four different landscape paintings. Each painting begins with "sad to watch," indicating that the sadness was pre-existing in her heart before looking at the scenery, and contemplating the scenery with that sadness, the more she watched, the sadder she became, and the more she became sad, the more she watched.

Indeed, Kieu's sadness is immense, not a fleeting sadness due to a momentary cause, but a persistent sadness throughout her life. To understand Kieu's tragic situation, one must place themselves in her position. Kieu had to part with Kim Trong, sell herself to save her father, briefly feel the pain, but had to momentarily forget herself to settle family matters dutifully. She had to leave her family with Ma Giam Sinh, carrying the heavy sadness of not fulfilling her love with Kim Trong, but finding solace in rescuing her family.

Nguyen Du's four paintings are not peculiar, but his way of conveying them in harmony with Thuy Kieu's situation and mood is truly unique. Nguyen Du is highly perceptive in observing scenes, has deep empathy, and is exceptionally skillful in language.
