What are the objectives of Grade 9 Literature in Vietnam?
Based on Section 3 of the General Education Program issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the objectives in teaching Literature for grade 9 are as follows:
- Help students continue to develop the good qualities formed in primary school; enhance and expand quality development requirements with specific manifestations such as: being proud of the nation's history and literature; having dreams and aspirations, self-study and self-respect spirit, civic consciousness, and respect for the law.
- Continue to develop general competencies, language skills, and literary abilities formed in primary levels with higher achievement requirements.
Development of language ability with requirements: distinguish between types of literary texts, argumentative texts, and informational texts; understand both explicit and implicit content of the texts; write paragraphs and essays narratively, descriptively, expressively, argumentatively, explicatively, and practically complete, coherent, logically, correctly by process and incorporating modes of expression; speak clearly and coherently; have a confident attitude suited to the communication context; understand with an appropriate attitude.
Development of literary ability with requirements: distinguish between genres of stories, poems, memoirs, scripts, and some specific sub-genres; recognize the characteristics of literary language, identify and analyze the effects of formal elements and artistic measures associated with each literary genre; recognize the emotional, cognitive, aesthetic values; analyze the imagery, content, and form of literary works; be able to create some literary products.
What are the specific competency requirements in teaching Literature for grade 9 in Vietnam?
According to subsection 2.2, sub-section 2 of Section 4 of the General Education Program issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the specific competency requirements in teaching English for grade 9 are as follows:
- Language skills
Know how to apply Vietnamese language knowledge along with personal experiences and reasoning abilities to understand the text; know how to read the text by type; understand the explicit and implicit content of the text.
Recognize and begin to analyze and evaluate the text's content and distinctive formal expression features; know how to compare this text with another, relate to personal life experiences; thereby have own perspectives, thoughts, and feelings about life, enriching spiritual life.
Write complete narrative, argumentative, and explanatory essays correctly by steps and combined with modes of expression.
Write narrative texts focusing on creatively recounting read stories; witnessed and participated events; imagined stories combining descriptive, expressive elements; descriptive texts focused on human activities (activity descriptions); expressive texts for scenes, people and reflections on literary works; create poems, mainly to recognize the characteristics of familiar poetic forms;
Write argumentative texts on issues reflecting personal thoughts and opinions, requiring relatively simple argumentative manipulations and easily obtainable evidence;
Write explanatory texts on issues familiar to students' life and knowledge with conventional structures; fill out certain forms, create some practical documents like work memorandums, emails, reports, advertisements, and interviews.
Write correctly by procedure, know how to find materials meeting the requirements of writing a text; understand intellectual property rights and know how to cite documents.
Present ideas and emotions clearly; be confident when speaking in front of many people; use appropriate language, gestures when speaking; narrate read or heard stories coherently; share own feelings, attitudes, experiences, ideas on discussed issues; discuss opinions on read or heard issues; explain a subject or process; know how to speak suitably with purpose, audience, and communication context; use images, symbols, diagrams, etc., to effectively present issues.
Understand with an appropriate attitude and summarize contents; recognize and initially evaluate the arguments and evidence used by the speaker; recognize speaker emotions; know how to effectively respond to what was heard.
- Literary skills
Recognize and distinguish between genres of literary texts: story, poem, play, memoir, and exemplary genres for each type; analyze the effects of certain formal artistic elements of each literary genre; understand explicit and implicit content of literary texts. Present feelings, thoughts about literary works and their impact on oneself; initially create some literary products.
Understand the message, thoughts, emotions, and attitudes of the author in the text; identify literary scripts, novels, and Nom verse tales, regulated and free verse, tragedy and comedy; content and form of literary works, literary figures; identify and analyze the effects of certain formal elements and artistic measures of each literary genre (combination of narrator's and character's voices, perspective, conflict, poetic rules, structure, words, lyrical flow; rhetorical devices like repetition, pun, irony, oxymoron).
Identify some broad features of Vietnam's literary history; understand the impact of literature on personal life.
