The Kind Traveler

A traveler saw an old lady standing by the riverbank. The elderly lady was worried because she had no way to cross the river. Due to a recent rainstorm, the river was swollen with water. The traveler asked:

"Ma'am, would you like me to carry you across the river?"

The old lady was surprised and nodded silently. The traveler carried her across the river. Upon reaching the other side, he felt tired. He saw the old lady turn back to look at him, nodding, and then walking away without thanking him. He felt a tinge of sadness. He did not expect any reward, but he thought: At the very least, she should have expressed some gratitude.

An hour later, the traveler had traveled quite a distance. It was a challenging journey for him. His legs were swollen from insect bites. Suddenly, a young man caught up with him, panting as he said, "Thank you for helping my grandmother. She told me you would need these items and wanted me to bring them to you." The young man then took some food and medicine from his bag and handed them to the kind traveler. The traveler kept thanking the young man. The young man then explained, "My grandmother cannot speak. Therefore, she wanted me to thank you on her behalf!"

Being an Elder Brother

– Author: Phan Thi Thanh Nhan

Being an elder brother is tough

Not just a game

With little sisters

You must be grown-up

When the baby cries

You must comfort

If she falls

You gently help her up

When gifts are given

You share more with her

If toys are nice

You let her play too

Being an elder brother is hard

But also very joyful

Anyone who loves the little ones

Can be an elder brother.

Small Hands

– Author: Nguyen Lam Thang

Tiny little hands

Yet the busiest in the house

After threading the needle for grandma

Then helping mom pick vegetables

Little hands so small

So quick, you know?

Watering plants for grandpa in the afternoon

Copying poetry for dad at night

Tiny little hands

Caring for the baby (when mom’s out)

These hands share treats

Console when the baby cries

Tiny little hands

Always scoring top marks

Contributing verbally in class

And famed for nimble dancing

Those crafty little hands

Each finger a blossoming flower.
