What are the contents of inclusion of national defense and security education in lower secondary school program in Vietnam?

Pursuant to Article 3 of Circular 08/2024/TT-BGDDT, the contents of inclusion of national defense and security education in lower secondary school program is as follows:

- Integrated into subjects and educational activities for each class, according to textbooks chosen by the school, suitable to the students' cognitive abilities in each locality, focusing on the following subjects: Literature; Civic Education; History and Geography; Arts (Music, Fine Arts); Local Education Content; Experiential and career-oriented activities.

- Common integrated themes from Grade 6 to Grade 9: educating the spirit of solidarity, patriotism of the Vietnamese nation in nation-building and defense through historical periods; protecting maritime and island sovereignty; protecting national sovereignty, territory, and borders; the rights and responsibilities of citizens in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland; introducing some historical events of resistance against foreign invaders; some content on protecting personal information when participating in social networks; introducing some content on preventing social evils for students; the state's belief and religious policies.

- Integrating themes by grade level:

+ Grade 6: Introduction to the history and traditions of the Vietnam People's Army and the Vietnam People's Public Security; historical sites associated with the nation's resistance against foreign invaders; the ingenious and creative fighting tactics of the army and people in the resistance wars against foreign invaders.

+ Grade 7: Introduction to activities, images of protecting Vietnam's maritime and island sovereignty; some content on protecting personal information when participating in social networks; freedom of belief and religion according to the law.

+ Grade 8: Educating the pride and national self-respect and the great solidarity strength of the entire nation in the fight against foreign invaders; introducing some border markers; the harm of social evils affecting all aspects of social life; the responsibility of students in participating in school violence prevention and control.

+ Grade 9: The consequences of invasion wars for the Vietnamese nation; some images of economic and social development and ensuring national defense and security; introducing some songs praising the glorious tradition of the Vietnam People's Army and the Vietnam People's Public Security; the responsibility of students in participating in building and defending the Fatherland.

Pursuant to Clause 3, Article 3 of Circular 08/2024/TT-BGDDT, the content volume of inclusion is regulated as follows:

The content volume of inclusion of national defense and security education content within subjects and educational activities aligns with the general education program, education plans of elementary and middle schools; ensuring sufficient transmission of national defense and security education content without increasing the learning time of subjects and educational activities.

What are the principles for implementing the inclusion of national defense and security education in lower secondary school program?

Pursuant to Article 2 of Circular 08/2024/TT-BGDDT, the principles for implementing the inclusion of national defense and security education in lower secondary school program are regulated as follows:

- Ensure alignment with the guidelines and policies of the Communist Party, and the state’s laws and policies.

- Ensure the goal of building and developing thinking, nurturing life skills, and shaping the character of Vietnamese individuals who love the Fatherland, fellow countrymen, socialism, and take pride in the national spirit and the tradition of fighting against foreign invaders to protect the Fatherland; ensure the integrated content is focused and highlighted through appropriate methods and forms.

- The integration of national defense and security education content in elementary and middle schools must be suitable to the psychological and physiological characteristics of the age group; it must be carried out through subject content and educational activities; ensure consistency across educational levels and maintain the prescribed general education program framework for each educational level.

Thus, the above are the principles that need to be ensured to integrate national defense and security education content in schools.

Additionally, pursuant to Article 4 of Circular 08/2024/TT-BGDDT, the methods and forms of inclusion are regulated as follows:

- Based on the lesson objectives and content, experience, and actual conditions, teachers integrate national defense and security education content vividly, concisely, memorably, and understandably; promote creativity, suitable for the psychological and physiological characteristics and understanding of students; combine illustrated images, artifacts appropriate to the lesson objectives and content; enhance the application of information technology in teaching integrated and practical lessons.

- Integrate national defense and security education content through teaching lessons, thematic teaching, experiential and career-oriented activities inside and outside the classroom; visiting historical sites, museums, traditional halls, armed force units; organizing camping, reading, listening, traditional story-telling contests, and contests to learn about national defense and security.
