According to the regulations in subsection 3, Section III of the General Education Program for the Literature subject issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the objectives of lower secondary school for the Literature subject are as follows:
- Help students continue to develop the good qualities they have formed in elementary school; enhance and expand development requirements concerning qualities with specific manifestations such as: knowing to take pride in national history and literature; having dreams and aspirations, a spirit of self-study and self-respect, a sense of citizenship, and respect for the law.
- Continue to develop general competencies, linguistic competence, and literary competence that have been formed in elementary school with higher achievable demands. Develop linguistic competence with the requirement: distinguish types of literary texts, argumentative texts, and informational texts; comprehend both the explicit and implicit content of texts; write complete, coherent, logical narrative, descriptive, expressive, argumentative, explanatory, functional-text paragraphs and essays correctly following the process and with a combination of expressive methods; speak clearly, coherently; have a self-confident attitude suited to the communication context; listen and understand with a suitable attitude.

- Identify topics, understand themes, and the significance of the texts read; recognize folk tales, short stories, lyrical poetry, and narrative poetry; lyrical essays and narrative essays; identify the lyrical subject, lyrical character, and the emotional, cognitive value of the literary work;
