4. Objectives for High School Level
a) Help students continue to develop the qualities formed in middle school; expand and enhance the requirement for quality development with specific manifestations: have bravery, personality, ideals, and ambitions, know how to preserve and promote Vietnamese cultural values; have a spirit of integration and awareness of global citizenship.
b) Continue to develop the competencies formed in middle school to a higher level: comprehend both explicit and implicit content of various types of texts at a more challenging level, reflected through the length, content, and reading requirements; reading comprehension with the aim of developing critical thinking; apply knowledge on literary language characteristics, literary trends, author styles, works, internal and external elements to form independent reading ability. Write proficiently in argumentative and comprehensive exposition (combining different modes of expression and argumentative maneuvers), following a proper process, with independent opinions, ensuring logic and persuasiveness. Speak and listen flexibly; possess the ability to listen and evaluate the content as well as the expression form of a presentation; know how to participate and have independent opinions, personality, and an appropriate argumentative attitude in discussions.
Developing literary competence with requirements: distinguishing literary works from other artistic forms; analyzing and commenting on the characteristics of literary language; distinguishing between expression and the expressed in literature; identifying and analyzing literary works based on their literary style characteristics; having a rich imagination, knowing how to appreciate, receive, and evaluate literature; creating some literary products.
Thus, the ability to listen and evaluate the content and style of expression of a presentation is a goal for high school education.
What are the required skills in reading for the new Vietnamese Literature program?
According to Section 5 of the General Education Program for Vietnamese Literature, issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT:
* Required Skills in Reading
- Reading technique: includes requirements regarding reading posture, reading aloud skills, silent reading skills, skimming skills, note-taking while reading, etc.
- Reading comprehension: the reading materials include literary texts, argumentative texts, and informational texts. Reading comprehension for each type of text and genre generally requires the following:
+ Comprehension of the text’s content through details, topics, themes, ideas, messages, etc.;
+ Understanding of the form of expression through the characteristics of text types and genres, components of each type and genre (story, plot, narrative, character, space, time, narrator, perspective, poetic patterns, rhythmic poetry, reasoning, evidence,...), expressive language, etc.;
+ Relating and comparing texts, connecting texts with historical, cultural, and social contexts, linking texts with the reader's personal experiences; comprehending multimodal texts, etc.;
+ Extensive reading, memorizing select passages, or texts of literature.
