What are methods for assessment of primary school students in Vietnam?
Based on Clause 2, Article 5 of the Regulations on Assessment of Primary School Students issued with Circular 27/2020/TT-BGDDT, primary school students are assessed using the following methods:
- Observation Method: Teachers monitor and listen to students during classroom teaching by using observation sheets, checklists, and journals to record students' expressions as evidence for evaluating their learning and training process.
- assessment through study records, students' products, and activities: Teachers provide comments and assessments on students’ products and outcomes to evaluate students according to each relevant assessment content.
- Oral assessment Method: Teachers engage in dialogues with students through Q&A sessions to gather information and provide timely feedback and assistance.
- Written Test Method: Teachers utilize tests with questions and exercises designed according to the levels and requirements of the curriculum, in the form of multiple-choice, open-ended questions, or a combination to assess achievement levels related to educational content.
What are regulations on conducting periodic assessments of primary school students' subjects in Vietnam?
According to Clause 1, Article 7 of the Regulations on Assessment of Primary School Students issued with Circular 27/2020/TT-BGDDT, primary school students are assessed periodically in their learning contents as follows:
- Mid-term in the first semester, end of the first semester, mid-term in the second semester, and end of the school year, subject teachers, based on regular assessments and achievement requirements, specific expressions of competency components of each subject or educational activity, evaluate students for each subject and educational activity at the following levels:
+ Successfully completed: meeting learning requirements well and regularly showing specific expressions of the competency components of the subject or educational activity;
+ Completed: meeting learning requirements and having specific expressions of competency components of the subject or educational activity;
+ Not completed: failing to meet some learning requirements or lacking specific expressions of competency components of the subject or educational activity.
- At the end of the first semester and the school year, for compulsory subjects: Vietnamese Language, Mathematics, Foreign Language 1, History and Geography, Science, Informatics and Technology, there are periodical tests;
For Grades 4 and 5, there are additional periodic tests in Vietnamese Language and Mathematics in the middle of the first semester and the middle of the second semester.
- The periodic test is appropriate to the required achievements and specific expressions of competency components of the subject, including questions and exercises designed at the following levels:
+ Level 1: Recognize, recall, or describe learned content and directly apply it to solve some familiar situations and problems in learning;
+ Level 2: Connect and organize some learned content to solve problems with similar content;
+ Level 3: Apply learned content to solve some new problems or provide reasonable feedback in learning and life.
- The test is corrected, commented on, and scored by the teacher on a 10-point scale, without decimal points, and is returned to students. The periodic test score is not used to compare one student with another.
If the results of a test at the end of the first semester and the end of the school year are unusual compared to regular assessments, the teacher may propose to the school to allow the student to take another test to accurately assess the student’s learning outcomes.
