What are methods of teaching speaking and listening in Literature for students in Vietnam?
Based on Subsection 3 Section 6 of the Literature Curriculum issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the purpose of teaching speaking and listening is to help students express and present clearly and confidently using spoken language; to understand correctly; to respect speakers and listeners; and to have appropriate attitudes in exchanges and discussions.
Teaching speaking and listening not only develops communication skills but also educates students' qualities and personalities.
In teaching speaking, teachers guide students to observe, analyze samples, and conduct practical exercises; instruct on how to prepare and present a presentation before a group, team, or class; guide the preparation of discussions and debates and how to participate in discussions and debates.
In teaching listening, teachers guide students on how to grasp the content, understand, and evaluate the speaker's viewpoint and intent; check unclear information; maintain a positive and respectful listening attitude towards speakers and differing opinions; collaborate and solve problems positively.
For interactive speaking and listening skills, teachers guide students to listen attentively and ask questions to understand the content; speak turn by turn in conversations; and use audiovisual aids to support oral presentations.
Practicing speaking and listening is the main activity to enhance these skills for students. Teachers flexibly organize learning activities to provide every student with opportunities to practice speaking, such as:
Requiring student pairs to speak to each other or present a speech to the group or class; organizing discussions and debates to understand the interactive nature of spoken language and form a positive, cooperative attitude in exchanges and discussions, and solve problems through discussions and exchanges; dividing groups, listening to comments, and drawing lessons from specific evaluation criteria provided by the teacher.
